Manton Seniors host Annual Outing

They played cards and enjoyed coffee and Danish inside the Patio Room, and they danced and dined inside the Willow Room.

The members of the Manton Seniors – this state’s top-ranked independent senior citizens organization – on Sunday took part in the non-profit’s Annual Outing at Twelve Acres Restaurant in Smithfield.

“We don’t get old,” mused Lori DeVito, the group’s long-serving president. “Our people love this outing. It’s always a special time with many offerings.”

Bill Elliano and his wife Josephine, along with Rose Coppola and Bob Tetreault, arrived at Twelve Acres earlier than most to enjoy some classic camaraderie and cards.

“Hey folks, we’re playing for high stakes,” Bill Elliano, a constant gift donor to the Manton Seniors, joked as he organized a small pile of pennies. “I’m not sure we can afford all this.”

The same held true for Louisa and Joseph Ruggieri and Dale Simonson and Irene Calicchia, who sat opposite the Ellianos table and were ready to begin a friendly game of poker.

Meanwhile, Mary Cerra – a former local and state elected official – and her friend Connie Laorenza enjoyed their morning coffee and freshly-baked raspberry Danish.

Other Manton members opted for bocce while waiting for the noontime dinner in The Willow Room.

“We’ve got a great menu today,” DeVito told Cerra and Laorenza while arranging the more than three-dozen raffle prizes on a banquet table. “I personally look forward to this day. It’s always full of excitement and events.”

After eating, those on hand filled the dance floor and enjoyed the music of the Calamari Brothers, a trio comprised of Vinny Lato, Anthony DelSignore, and Jack Rubino.

The next meeting of the Manton Seniors is scheduled for Oct. 4 at the Johnston Senior Center. 1
