Massasoit takes down men's soccer team in shootout in Region championship game

Posted

The CCRI men's soccer team traveled to Brockton, Mass. to play the Warriors of Massasoit Community College for the Region XXI Championship game, where the Knights lost 2-1 in a shootout. Massasoit had the 4-3 edge in the shootout.

The Knights had already lost to Massasoit earlier in the year on two occasions. This time, the Knights pressured and had a few chances right at the start of the game. A defensive breakdown allowed Massasoit to get on the scoreboard first in the first half, despite the fact that CCRI keeper Alex Padilla (Providence) had a great game inside the goal.

“This was the best goalkeeping I have seen while I have been coaching at CCRI,” said CCRI head coach Gabe Toro.

In the second half, CCRI’s Evan Gaudreau (Jamestown) was able to break into the 18-yard box where he is extremely dangerous. Massasoit’s defense took him down which resulted in a penalty kick. Gaudreau was able to take the PK and put it in the back of the net to tie the game 1-1. That’s how the game ended in regulartion.

The Knights continued to battle and fight for two, ten-minute overtime halves. Both teams had chances and the Knights kept the pressure on.

Adam Couto (Moosup, Conn.) and Chris Quinn (Cranston) had incredible games today. The entire back line had fantastic games. Brandon Iannelli (North Kingstown) and Logan Corcoran (Greenville) hustled and contributed a great deal to the game.

In the end, penalty kicks decided the winner of the meeting. In the penalty kicks Evan Gaudreau and Junior Robert (Providence) scored their shots.  Padilla blocked a shot, giving the Knights the momentum.  The next two kickers for the Knights were not able to finish Massasoit off though, as Massasoit's goalkeeper made two saves and gave them the win.

“Once you get to penalty kicks, it is almost like playing the lottery because anything can happen,” Toro said. “We had some quality chances during the game and if we put those away early we would not put ourselves in this situation. I am extremely proud of the warrior spirit the players brought to this game. I believe the players believed in each other today and played the way they are able to play for 90 plus minutes. We accomplished our goal today even though we did not win.”

Lady Knights squeeze by Springfield College JV

The CCRI women’s soccer team hosted the Pride Springfield College Junior Varsity squad to the CCRI soccer complex in Lincoln Wednesday and won 1-0. With the victory, the Lady Knights ended the regular season with a 10-4-1 record.

Both teams battled up and down the field at a frenetic pace throughout the first half until the 30th minute, when the Lady Knights broke the ice. Sophomore midfielder Carla Porras (Narragansett) lofted a beautiful ball over the Springfield defenders, sending freshman forward Catherine Lopes (Warren) in all alone on the goalkeeper. However, she shot the ball right near the keeper, who made the initial sprawling save. But the rebound came right out to sophomore midfielder Ashley LeClair (Westerly), who scored the only goal of the match.

Freshman goalkeeper Jennifer Kilburn (Norton, Mass.) recorded her eighth shutout of the season in 15 contests, bringing her goals against average down to 1.04. Kilburn made 11 saves on the day, including a dramatic point-blank save in the first half that she deflected off the crossbar

“Springfield always brings us a good and hard fought game,” said CCRI head coach Dennis Grassini. “Even though things were quite even, especially in the first half, we had too many wasted scoring opportunities in the second half. We just couldn’t seem to find the net today.”

The will travel to New Jersey to compete in the District E women’s Soccer Tournament on Saturday.  The Lady Knights will face off against Region XV Champion and No. 2 Monroe College (13-1) at 1 p.m.
