Mayor announces $537,415 in community block grants

Mayor Scott Avedisian has announced the distribution of $537,415 in federal Community Development Block Grant funds that will benefit non-profit agencies and a neighborhood association. The funds will be awarded for the fiscal year beginning July 1. 

Public service grant awards are as follows: $13,800 for the Boys and Girls Clubs of Warwick for their Oakland Beach branch operations; $11,500 to Child Inc. for transportation for its Head Start program; $9,124 to Comprehensive Community Action for its Chronic Disease Management program; $12,880 for Cornerstone Adult Day Services for programs for individuals with Alzheimer’s disease and $50,000 for renovations/program expansion; $11,132 to Elizabeth Buffum Chace House, Inc., for its victim safety and self sufficiency program. 

Also, the House of Hope CDC has been awarded $18,032 to pay for supportive services and $75,000 for upgrades to their facility on Post Road in Apponaug; $14,628 has been awarded to The Kent Center for its victims of trauma program; $2,760 for the Rhode Island Center for Law and Public Policy for its senior legal clinic; $15,640 for the Rhode Island Family Shelter, Inc., for case management services. 

The Women’s Development Corporation has been awarded $50,000 for the School House Place housing project, and the Warwick Museum of Art will receive $20,000 toward replacement of its wheelchair lift. WestBay Community Action, Inc. will receive $9,476 for its children’s center case manager, $24,840 for a social services case manager, $25,000 for its home repair program and $45,000 for the WestBay farm, located at historic Barton Farm. 

The Apponaug Area Improvement Association will receive $100,000 in this funding cycle. The city distributes money among several associations annually on a rotating basis.

Another $131,000 has been allocated for the Office of Housing and Community Development’s home rehabilitation program. A total of $192,000 will fund administrative and planning costs, and $33, 034 has been set aside for development of a five-year strategic plan for the office. Funding of $6,051 for a planning study project at the historic Green Cemetery Lot 52 has also been awarded.
