Mayor mum on political plans at event raising $17,000

Mayor Scott Avedisian thought it “a trip down memory lane” as more than 225 people turned out last Thursday for a $50 a ticket event at Chelo’s restaurant on Post Road.

And while Avedisian did not disclose his political plans for this year, the first fundraiser in more than a year is being viewed as a sure sign that he is planning on running.

In comments to the gathering, the mayor talked about his 14 years in office and, in particular, recent developments including completion of the people mover at Green Airport, the master plan for the development of City Centre Warwick, restoration of City Hall and airport expansion.

Asked for highlights from his talk, Avedisian responded in an email, “I ended with a thank you to all those who have been part of this journey ending with a special thanks to those who mentored and coached me and are no longer here: John Earle, Ted Sheehan, Rose Picozzi, Bob Shapiro, Bill Bowling, Donna Flaherty, and my parents.”

Longtime friends, who have been active in his campaigns since he ran for City Council in 1990, Mark and Janet Russell introduced and spoke about the mayor.

In attendance were former City Council President Bruce Place, Ward 3 Councilwoman Camille Vella-Wilkinson, City Council President Donna Travis, Councilman Steve Colantuono and former Councilman Ray Gallucci. Also there were state Representatives David Bennett, Frank Ferri and Teresa Ann Tanzi, Senator Dawson Hodgson, Republican candidate for governor Ken Block, and West Warwick former Mayor Mike Levesque.

“Nice to have a great crowd. Good people coming together is always a nice thing,” Avedisian said.

The mayor said last month he plans to announce his political plans later this year.

Fundraising committee member Edward Tavares said the event raised about $17,000 and that there “a lot of new faces in the room.”
