Merilyn L. (Spencer) Durrell, 77, a former resident of North Scituate Village, died July 8, 2013 at Martin Hospital South in Stuart, Florida. She was the beloved wife of the late Clyde Durrell.

Born in Providence, the daughter of the late Milton and Myrtle (Lawrence) Spencer, she was raised in Cranston and had moved with her husband to North Scituate in 1975 where they lived until moving to Arkansas in 1999. She moved to North Carolina in 2006 and to Stuart, Fla. ten months ago. She and her husband were co-owners of the former Snow White Cleaners on Budlong Road in Cranston, a business started by her father-in-law on Gansett Avenue at which her husband had worked for his father since the age of 14. The couple moved the business to Budlong Road in 1974 and sold the business in 1980 when her husband decided to go back to bible college. After that she worked for ten years as a designer and sales representative for Home Interiors. She was a member of Advent Christian Churches most of her life and Foundations Bible Collegiate Church and Northview Baptist Church in later years in North Carolina.

She will be remembered as a very kind and loving wife, mother, grandmother and friend who helped many over all of her years. Merilyn’s favorite verse in the Bible is Galatians 2:20 which reads: “ I am crucified with Christ: nevertheless I live; yet not I, but Christ liveth in me: and the life which I now live in the flesh I live by the faith of the Son of God, who loved me, and gave himself for me.”

She is survived by her daughters: Beverly Whipple and her husband, Richard of Kokomo, Indiana and Robin Johnson and her husband, Marshall of Stuart, Fla.; her brother: Norman Spencer and his wife, Arlene of West Warwick; her daughter-in-law, Robin Durrell-Newcomb of Danielson, Connecticut; seven grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren. She was the mother of the late James L. Durrell; grandmother of the late James L. Durrell Jr.; and sister of the late Dorothy Hutchins.

A private graveside service was held by her family on Friday, July 12, 2013 in Greenwood Burial Grounds, Fairview Avenue, Coventry. Burial followed. Information and condolences at carpenterjenks.com.
