Miriam Hospital recruiting smokers for ‘Breatheasy’ cessation program

Posted

The American Cancer Society is encouraging smokers to quit or plan to quit smoking during the 39th annual Great American Smokeout today, and The Miriam Hospital is offering a smoking cessation program that can help. Breatheasy is a smoking cessation program that features yoga or health and wellness techniques to help smokers overcome nicotine addiction and quit smoking.

Funded by the National Center for Complementary and Alternative Medicine at the National Institutes of Health, Breatheasy is an eight-week, group-based smoking cessation program and research study led by researchers at The Miriam Hospital’s Centers for Behavioral and Preventive Medicine that provides information on how to prepare to stop smoking, ways to deal with nicotine withdrawal, specific skills needed to quit, and tools to remain smoke free.

Breatheasy participants are divided into two smoking cessation groups that incorporate either a yoga program or a health and wellness program. Those in the yoga group will attend classes two times a week and receive a regimented yoga program to follow. Participants in the health and wellness group, who will also attend classes twice a week, will learn about lifestyle changes, health and prevention, healthy eating strategies and stress management. Both strategies have proven to be effective in helping with smoking cessation.

The study, which has already been successful for many men and women, is still enrolling participants. Financial compensation is also given for completing assessment visits. Eligible participants must be 18 years or older, healthy, not pregnant, not currently practicing yoga or mindfulness-based therapy and smoke at least five cigarettes a day.
