That’s a wrap!

The Central Rhode Island Chamber of Commerce’s (CRICC) “Movies in the Park” series at Rocky Point came to a close last Thursday evening as more than 2,700 people turned out for the movie Finding Nemo. It was the third such event held at the park in as many months.

A fourth movie showing, featuring the film Happy Feet, had been rescheduled for tonight after thunderstorms cancelled the original July 30 showing. With storms in the forecast, however, this week’s event was again cancelled and will not be rescheduled.

“Sadly, the forecast for Tuesday is afternoon showers and thunderstorms with potential for severe thunderstorms,” wrote CRICC president Lauren Slocum in an email. “Therefore,  Happy Feet has been cancelled for the safety of our guests, volunteers, vendors and food trucks.”

After nearly two decades of sitting idle after the amusement park there closed, Rocky Point saw movie night event crowds that rivaled the size of those during the park’s heyday.

“The numbers are staggering: over 1,500 the first night (The Lego Movie), over 1,700 for night two (Annie [2014]) and the count is coming in at over 2,700 for our third movie, Finding Nemo. Simply more than we ever dreamed of,” wrote Slocum. “This has been a tremendous opportunity for the community and the Chamber.”

The Chamber partnered with National Grid, Wave Federal Credit Union, WPRI, Warwick Tourism, Slocum Realty/Insurance, Health Care Services, Ridley Lowell Business & Technical Institute, and the Rocky Point Foundation to run the events. Movie screens and the associated movies were shown by Entertainment Under the Stars.

“We thank you for a fabulous summer movie series and look forward to seeing you all again in 2016 for Movies in the Park at Rocky Point,” said Slocum.
