Former longtime Bishop Hendricken football coach Ron Mosca, who also served as teacher at the school since the late 1970’s, passed away on Fridaya the age of 60 at Providence’s Philip Hulitar Inpatient Center after battling illness for several months.

Mosca was an assistant football coach for the Hawks from 1978 until being appointed head coach in 1990, where he turned a struggling program into one of the state’s best.

His team made six consecutive Division I Super Bowl appearances in the 90’s, winning the title three straight years from 1994-96.

In 1994, Mosca was named the Rhode Island Football Coaches’ Association “Coach of the Year.” His 1995 team was named a USA Today “Top 20 Team” in the United States. He is a member of both the Gridiron Club and Rhode Island Football Coaches’ Association Hall of Fame.

He was recently inducted into Hendricken’s Athletic Hall of Fame in October. Overall, he won 99 games as the Hendricken football coach before coaching his final game in 2006.

“He rebuilt the program,” current Hendricken head coach Keith Croft said in October. “He brought it back to respectability. I just remember it getting better and stronger and tougher. Obviously, he took them to a place where no one had ever been before.”

In addition to his time coaching football, Mosca had been an active coach at Hendricken over the years, coaching sailing, tennis, and baseball. During his tenure, his teams won state titles in both freshman and JV baseball and in sailing.

Mosca served as Hendricken’s Director of Technology and graduated from the school in 1973.

He is survived by his sons Anthony R. Mosca and Andrew R. Mosca.
