NEIT expands marine technology to meet job demand

Posted

Dr. Douglas H. Sherman, senior vice president and provost at New England Institute of Technology (NEIT), announced that the university has expanded its Marine Technology program to answer the labor market’s need for advanced marine technicians.

The Associate in Science degree program in Advanced Marine Technology offers additional courses of study in more of the advanced electronics and computer controls common in marine drive systems today. These additional courses include Advanced Marine Diesel Service and Maintenance, Advanced Marine Propulsion Systems, and Advanced Marine Gasoline and EFI Emissions. NEIT’s traditional six-quarter Associate in Science degree program in Marine Technology will also continue to be available to students as well.

The program includes theory and hands-on practical training in marine electricity, outboard engine repair, marine gas and diesel inboard repair, transmissions, marine business concepts, and navigation. Marine systems installation, repair and service that include mechanical, electrical, electronic, and hydraulic systems for both recreational and commercial vessels are also included in the curriculum. Students will be well versed in the American Boat and Yacht Council (ABYC) standards through the use of its manual throughout their program of study. In addition, marine business procedures are taught using computerized learning methods with marine-specific software.

Graduates of the Advanced Marine Technology program will be skilled technicians ready for positions in such areas as marina/boatyard operations, service and repair of marine diesel engines, support services for commercial vessels, engineering positions aboard commercial vessels and yachts, and marine electronics installation. Students may also continue their studies at NEIT and earn a Bachelor of Science degree in Business Management Technology.

Paul Harden, director of transportation technologies at New England Tech, stated, “Through meetings with our Technical Advisory Committee, which is comprised of regional marine industry employers, we learned that advancing the skill level of marine technicians entering the labor market was of utmost importance. By adding these new courses, our graduates will have a competitive edge when seeking employment.”
