On Thursday, November 8, the National Circus of the People’s Republic of China will perform “Cirque Chinois” at the historic Park Theatre in Cranston. Founded in 1953, the award-winning troupe is currently in the midst of their first ever cross-country tour of the United States and Canada.
Straight from Beijing, the National Circus of the People’s Republic of China is highly acclaimed for their unique acts such as Great Teeterboard, Grand Flying Trapeze, Group Contortion, Straw Hats Juggling and more. Along with being one of the longest running circuses in China, and in the world, this group was responsible for changing the concept of circuses from animal-focused to performance-focused, influencing the creators of “Cirque du Soleil.”
“We’re delighted to bring this distinguished group of performers to Rhode Island for the first time,” said Yusuf Gandhi, Executive Director of the Park Theater. “It’s important to the Park Theatre to showcase the different cultures that make up our communities while also providing our patrons with an unforgettable experience. It’s going to be an amazing show.”
The National Circus of the People’s Republic of China has won over 20 gold and silver medals at international circus festivals such as the Monte Carlo International Circus Festival, Cirque de Demain and the China National Acrobatic Competition. The group’s flying trapeze act has performed with Ringling Bros. and Barnum & Bailey Circus along with tours throughout Western Europe. Entertainment writer Don Fowler saw this circus on his trip to China and counts it as one of the best performances he has seen.

Built in 1924, the Park Theatre served as a cultural landmark for nearly eight decades until its closing in 2002. Following seven years and nearly $10 million in renovations, the Park Theatre has been reborn as Rhode Island’s newest theatre and performing arts center. As a fully-equipped, state-of-the-art multi-purpose facility, the Park Theatre features concerts, comedy, theatrical performances, opera, dance recitals, children’s and family shows and more. Through its extensive renovations, the Park Theatre boasts a larger, deeper stage and 1,000 plush seats that feature significantly more legroom between rows than most theatres. The facility also includes the Stage Door Restaurant and Lounge, a pre-show destination that offers a unique environment for guests to indulge in gourmet dinners, appetizer offerings and cocktails before a performance. Free parking is available for all events behind City Hall. For more information, visit www.ParkTheatreRI.com.
