National Family Caregiver Awareness Month kicks off with RI Caregiver Awards event

In a recent event the State House, Rhode Island honored family and professional caregivers at the National Family Caregiver Awareness Month Kick Off, hosted by the Caregiver Alliance of Rhode Island.

The annual November observation is a time to recognize and celebrate individuals who care for family members and friends by helping them maintain their independence and quality of life at home or in the community.

Many people do not think of themselves as a caregiver, but helping with rides to the doctor, shopping, preparing meals, bill paying, bathing, grooming, dressing, housekeeping, walking or transferring to a wheelchair, managing medications or arranging services are all examples of the tasks that family caregivers assist with on a daily basis.

“Family caregivers play a vital role in ensuring that their loved ones receive the right care, at the right time,” said Department of Human Services Director Melba Depea Affigne. “As we work to shift our long-term care system towards one that gives preference to home- and community-based options, we must remember to recognize and support our caregivers every month of the year.”

At the event, Annual Caregiver of the Year Awards were presented to family caregivers Susie Adler, Kathie Frattarelli, Karen Friend, Jodi Raimo, and Bruce Ritchotte. Maureen Maigret was presented with the Langevin Award, recognizing her advocacy and public policy work in support of caregivers. The Professional Caregiver Award was given to Alcina Goncalves, with the Best Practices in the Workplace Award presented to West View Nursing Home.

“Rhode Island caregivers play various roles, often looking after multiple generations at a time and providing 124 million hours of care, worth an estimated $1.78 billion. Long-term care is expensive,” noted Director of the Rhode Island Division of Elderly Affairs Charles J. Fogarty. “Caregivers help keep healthcare costs down, and the 134,000 Rhode Island family caregivers provide services that are invaluable. Loving, compassionate care from a family member is priceless.”

The Caregiver Alliance of Rhode Island hosts the annual awards ceremony, promoting recognition of the quiet acts of selflessness and service by caregivers. The Department of Human Services, Division of Elderly Affairs, recognizes the importance of supporting caregivers, investing in programs that expand home- and community-based services as well as services and supports specifically for caregivers.
