O’Dell fires one-hitter as Knights take down Dean

Posted

The CCRI Knights defeated conference rival Dean College Monday afternoon at Fell field by a score of 3-0 behind a one-hitter from starting pitcher Ryan O’Dell (Lincoln). With the win, CCRI improved its record to 11-4 on the season.

O’Dell was in complete control from start to finish, surrendering just one hit –a soft groundball down the third-base line – while striking out 10 Bulldogs’ hitters over seven innings of work. He didn’t walk a single batter and struck out six Dean hitters in a row at one point.

In the fourth, TJ Boyajian (Warwick) drew a leadoff walk and then stole second. O’Dell hit a groundball to the shortstop who mishandled it, allowing Boyajian to score. The Knights continued their rally when Eddie Apice (North Kingstown) drew the second walk of the inning, putting runners on first and second. That set up a nearly identical groundball to shortstop off the bat of Zach Wood (Griswold, Conn.) that was once again mishandled, allowing O’Dell to score and the Knights to increase their lead to 2-0.

The Knights’ eventual 3-0 lead proved to be more than enough for O’Dell, who continued to shut down the Dean lineup down the stretch en route to a complete-game effort. With the win, O’Dell improved his record to 2-0 on the season. He has now struck out an impressive 21 batters over just 14 innings pitched, and he also improved his ERA to 0.64 after Monday’s performance.

CCRI has now won six of its seven games since returning from Florida.

Lady Knights split with Sacred Heart JV

The CCRI Lady Knights’ softball team hosted the Pioneers of Sacred Heart University Junior Varsity for a doubleheader on Saturday. The Lady Knights and Pioneers split the double dip with The Pioneers winning game one 7-3 and the Lady Knights winning the second game 6-5. With the split, the Lady Knights are now 3-9 on the season.

Game 1

Sophomore Macayla Paiva (West Greenwich) got the start and pitched well enough to win, but poor defense late in the game allowed four unearned runs, which ended up being the margin of victory. Paiva threw seven innings allowing seven runs – only three earned – on six hits while striking out five.

She gave up two runs in the second and on one the fifth and went into the seventh tied 3-3. With a runner on third with one out, intentional walks set up forces at every base. But a passed ball scored the runner from third, followed by an error at second base to score two and a double sealed the scoring in a four-run seventh inning.

Offensively the Lady Knights scored in the first as captain Alex Place (East Greenwich) scored on a fielder’s choice off the bat of Sam Archambeault (Harrisville). CCRI tacked on another when Alexis Jendzejec (West Greenwich) singled, reached third on an error and was knocked in by Amber Boucher (Warwick).

With the Pioneers leading 3-2 in the bottom of the sixth inning, freshman shortstop Ashley Spear (Harrisville) came to the plate and launched a solo home run to left center field to tie the game 3-3.

Game 2

Freshman Taylor Butler (North Kingstown) got the start and, thanks to a five-run seventh inning rally from her offense, she was able to earn her second victory of the year.

Butler threw seven innings, allowing five runs on eleven hits while striking out two and walking none. She got into some trouble in the third inning when she gave up three runs on four hits, and Sacred Heart tacked on one more in the fourth and fifth to go up by 5-1. Butler worked quickly in the sixth and seventh to keep CCRI in striking distance, and a late-game rally secured her second collegiate victory.

The Lady Knights got on the board in the fourth inning as Archambeault walked and advanced to third on wild pitches, and later scored on a single from Jendzejec. But through six, the Lady Knights had only one run on four hits.

However, in the seventh, captain Liz Coburn (Chepachet) led-off with a single followed by a walk from Sarah Deal (North Kingstown). Jesse Ossian (Chandler, Ariz.) then reached on an infield single to load the bases. Coburn scored on a fielder’s choice from Boucher, and Butler, singled to center to score Deal, and Archambeault and Spear followed with RBI singles to bring up Jendzejec with runners on second and third with the score tied at five. She stroked a singled to left center that scored the winning run.
