Oscar-winning pictures: Library film series starting Feb. 18

Many movies win one or two Academy Awards, but only a few take home a bunch. Join journalist and film connoisseur Steve Starger for a look at four extraordinary, multiple Oscar-winning pictures at Warwick Public Library on Thursdays, Feb. 18 and 25 and March 3 and 10 at 7 p.m.

On Feb. 18, see “All About Eve” (1950), starring Bette Davis and Anne Baxter. Ambitious actress Eve Harrington connives her way into the life and career of Broadway star Margo Channing. “All About Eve” was nominated for 14 Academy Awards, and won six.

On Feb. 25, the series featues “On the Waterfront” (1954), starring Marlon Brando and Eva Marie Saint. Ex-boxer Terry Malloy gets caught up in union corruption on New York’s docks. “On the Waterfront” was nominated for 12 Academy Awards, and won eight.

“The Sting” (1973), starring Paul Newman and Robert Redford is featured on March 3. Con men Johnny Hooker and Henry Gondorff team up to swindle ruthless gambler Doyle Lonnegan. “The Sting” was nominated for 10 Academy Awards, and won seven.

On March 10, watch “One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest” (1975), starring Jack Nicholson and Louise Fletcher. Misfit mental hospital inmate Randle McMurphy battles Nurse Ratched’s strict authority. “One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest” was nominated for nine Academy Awards, and won five.
