(Imperfect comedy)

The young ladies in the audience laughed often at the risqué, tepid humor in this imperfect comedy that seldom hits the right notes.

The Bellas are back but get off to a disastrous start before the credits. They are doing their a cappella act before a big crowd, including the president and first lady, when Fat Amy (Rebel Wilson) has a “wardrobe malfunction” of major proportions.

They are banned from their college competition, but find a way to enter the world competition, where their archrivals from Germany appear to have it all over them.

But before we get to the BIG SHOW, we have to endure a weak storyline that has Beca (Anna Kendrick), the leader of the group, secretly going off on her own, a couple of dumb romances, lots of bickering, and a trip to a special “bonding” camp. Finally, after nearly two hours, they go up against Das Sound Machine in Copenhagen. Guess who wins?

The salvation for the movie is the appearance of director Elizabeth Banks and John Michael Higgins as color commentators for the competitions. Their politically incorrect comments, delivered with tongue in cheek, are truly hilarious. Too bad Banks didn’t do a better job of directing this fractured movie. And too bad the political incorrectness by the rest of the cast falls flat on its face.

There’s a stupid ending, and then the credits role as the audience flees for the exits, most of them missing a funny afterthought involving the members of “The Voice.”

Rated PG-13, with profanity and sexual references.
