The Winsor Hill Elementary School Parent-Teacher Organization (PTO) recently recorded another success story for a number of Johnston students.
“This was a wonderful enrichment program for our fourth-grade students,” said Rosemary Petrucci, a teacher at Winsor Hill. “It was like an in-house field trip funded by our great PTO and included three educational experiences.”
Petrucci, who noted the PTO also organized a craft project that tied in with one of the science themes, said those three areas were “Biomes: An Introduction to Marine Animals,” “Audubon: Bring Back Leatherbacks,” and “Reasons for the Seasons.”
“Our students really enjoyed the science-related programs that were presented in the morning,” she said. “Renee DiPippo, a marine biologist from Biomes, introduced the students to a variety of marine animals including starfish, quahogs, spider crabs, and horseshoe crabs. The children loved being able to see and touch the creatures.”
Two educational specialists, Tracey Hall and Lisa Maloney, led groups to explore a variety of topics – including a turtle’s anatomy – during the “Audubon” presentation.
Meanwhile, Mike Marks brought a traveling EduTarium to Winsor Hill to model the night sky. Students discovered how the length of the day changes over the year by graphing the position of the sun at sunrise and sunset.
