The Pilgrim, Toll Gate and Warwick Vets girls’ swimming teams competed in the Division III championships at Roger Williams University on Saturday.

The three teams placed well, earning third, fourth and fifth place, respectively, out of seven teams.

Pilgrim placed third, Toll Gate fourth and Vets fifth.

Pilgrim and Toll Gate had several solid finishes at the meet.

The Titans’ Athena Sampalis had a first-place finish in the 100 breaststroke, while Wenona Alexander won the 200 individual medley.

Toll Gate also placed second in the 200 free relay with a team of Alexander, Sampalis, Abby Lewis and Emma Seidenberg.

Sophia Caracuzzo shined for the Pats, placing first in the 500 free and second in the 100 butterfly.

Mackenzie Fraser was also impressive, winning the 100 backstroke and finishing second in the 50 free.

Pilgrim freshman Fortune Premy won the 50 free.

The Pats’ relay team of Fraser, Premy, Caracuzzo and McKenzie Caron placed second in the 200 medley relay and in the 400 free relay.

Titans compile one win, two losses in a week

The Toll Gate girls’ basketball team played three games in the last week, compiling a 1-2 record over that span.

The Titans fell, 38-31, on Thursday night at Mt. Pleasant, but bounced back on Friday afternoon, rolling to a 48-21 win over Block Island to move to 8-8.

Sophomore Hannah McNulty was dominant against Block Island, racking up a double-double with 23 points and 11 rebounds.

The win officially clinched fifth place and a playoff berth in Division III-South.

Unfortunately, the Titans would lose to undefeated Middletown, 47-23, at home on Saturday afternoon.

Toll Gate will wrap up its season tonight at Central at 6 p.m.

Central has been one of the best teams in D-III this season, as it owns a record of 12-4.

Pats close season with win over Chariho

Freshman forward Tyrone Weeks led the Pilgrim basketball team to a 55-48 win over subdivision rival, Chariho, on Friday night, filling up the stat sheet with 16 points, nine rebounds and three blocks.

The win gave Pilgrim its first 12-win season since 2000-01.

Despite a 23-point effort from Chariho’s Jake Beauregard, the Pats were able to build a seven-point lead by halftime and maintain it through the final buzzer.

Brandon Lawton and Deven Lavallee chipped-in with nine points apiece in a winning effort for Pilgrim, while forward Elijah Dressel scored seven.

Pilgrim will now wait and see where it’ll be seeded for the Division III tournament, which will get underway within the next week.

Freshman Hawks win state title

The Bishop Hendricken freshman basketball team defeated La Salle 66-58 at East Providence High School on Saturday afternoon to capture the state title.

The Hawks had previously defeated Tolman in the preliminaries, Coventry in the quarterfinals and Portsmouth in the semifinals.

Hendricken concluded its year with just one loss – a 47-44 loss to South Kingstown in the regular season.

The head coach of the team is Thiago Gomes, the brother of varsity head coach, Jamal Gomes.

Members of the roster include Jalen Watson, Ahmad Smith, Dylan Durante, Dylan Gardner, Anthony Bartolomeo, Jackson Caffrey, Paul Rizzo, Damon Aldrich, Jared Mazzulla, Daniel Kennedy, Ethan Martin, Kahlin Watkins, Conor Kiely, Nicola Salvaggio and Dominic Volpe.
