The Pilgrim and Warwick Vets unified basketball teams took the court at Vets on Wednesday morning in front of a packed gymnasium.

And the two teams put on a show, trading baskets down the stretch in an eventual 43-38 overtime victory for Pilgrim.

The Pats erased a 10-point halftime deficit to tie the score, 38-38, at the end of regulation to force overtime.

Pilgrim would carry that momentum into the extra period. With just over two minutes, 30 seconds remaining, Max O’Neill sank an elbow jumper to put the Pats ahead by two.

Vets’ Jon Carpetis looked to tie the game on the other end, but his shot went halfway down and rolled off the rim.

Eric Carter, who finished in double figures with 11 points, then iced the game for Pilgrim. He took a pass beyond the arc with under a minute left and threw up a one-handed shot that found nothing but nylon to stretch the lead and the end margin to five.

The ’Canes came out strong in the first half in front of their home crowd.

Baskets from Jared Guiot, Jacob Madore and Kylie Ordway allowed Vets to race out to a quick, 6-0 lead.

A make from in close by Brian Dusseault got the Pats on the board to end the run, but Vets’ strong play continued as the half wore on.

Chelsea Gonzalez responded when she collected an offensive rebound and converted on a put-back a couple of minutes later.

Hannah Pelletier also chipped in with a trio of baskets for the ’Canes in the waning minutes of the first half.

Gonzalez and Pelletier each had a game-high six points in the first half, as their team took a 22-12 lead into the break.

Pilgrim would respond with strong play of its own in the final 16 minutes of regulation.

The Pats trailed by as much as 12 in the second half, but point guard Henry Linphanit fired cross-court passes to Kim Mallett for made jumpers on back-to-back possessions to keep Pilgrim’s deficit at eight.

With just over six minutes left, O’Neill trimmed Vets’ lead to two, 32-30, when he swished a short-range shot in the paint.

Helen Czephya sunk two shots for Vets after O’Neill’s make to keep Pilgrim at a distance.

However, the Pats showed their resilience, remaining close before tying the game on a pair of made shots by Mallett in the final minute of regulation.

In overtime, makes by O’Neill and Carter were enough to clinch the win for Pilgrim on the road.

In addition to Carter’s 11 points, Mallett scored a game-high 12, while O’Neill had six, Linphanit and Josh Langevin each netted four and Mike McGregor, Natasha Jourdain and Dusseault all made a basket apiece.

Vets was led by Gonzalez, who poured in a team-high 10 points. Czephya also scored eight points, while Pelletier finished with six, Madore and Ordway scored four apiece and Guiot, Andreana Snead and Hope Santos all chipped in with two points.

Pilgrim will return to action next Wednesday at 3:30 p.m., when it hosts Bishop Hendricken. Vets will also play next Wednesday, when it travels to Coventry for a 9:15 a.m. start.

Thanks for covering this. The Unified program is a gem, and a Godsend for the players and their parents.
