VANDALS

Officer Walter Larson took a report of vandalism to a car parked at Warwick Mall on Feb. 17. The Cranston woman who owned the car showed Larson where someone had keyed the car all along the passenger side of the vehicle and occasionally up and down, indicating a deliberate scratching of the paint. She said she was sure that the damage had been done that day. She said she had no idea who would do it and was not having any problems with people. No witnesses.

Officer Robert Canis-Langlais reported going to the Chick-fil-A restaurant on Bald Hill Road around 7 a.m. on Feb. 17. The manager showed the officer the front door window glass that had been shattered sometime over night. Nothing was reported taken. No suspects or witnesses.

Officer Tomas Bogusz reported going to a home on Scranton Avenue on Feb. 18 for a report of two broken car windows. The homeowner told Bogusz he didn’t report the first broken window on his Mercedes because he supposed it was broken by a plow or truck with a sander on Feb. 15. He said this time, however, there were footprints in the snow next to his Camry, leading up to the smashed passenger window. He said he also noticed that the plastic sheeting he put over the window of the Mercedes for protection was cut, indicating that some one went inside the Mercedes, although nothing appeared to be missing. No suspects or witnesses.

SHOPLIFTING

Several cruisers were dispatched to the JC Penney store in Warwick Mall on Feb. 17 for a shoplifting in progress. Loss prevention at the store told dispatch they left in a white mini-van that was stopped at East Avenue at the on ramp for I-95. Loss prevention did a show up at the scene and identified the women as the three they saw inside, two of whom had concealed packages of fragrance in their handbags. They said the third older woman was acting as a lookout in the store. Danially Correira, 19, of 76 Turner St., Brocton, Mass., was charged with stealing $18.37 of perfume; Maria Gomes, 22, of 31 Clarence St. in Brockton was charged with stealing $1,163 worth of fragrances; and Joaquina Sargent, 52, also of 31 Clarence St. was charged with participating in the theft and was released on $1,000 surety bail. The other two were released with summonses.

The next day at the JC Penney store, loss prevention detained a Tiverton woman for stealing an $80 bottle of Jimmy Choo perfume by concealing it in a Victoria’s Secret shopping bag. Jessica A. Hanson, 35, of 68 Pierce Ave. in Tiverton was later released with a summons for District Court.

DUI

Officer Nicholas Reay reported he was on patrol around 4:40 p.m. on Feb. 8 when he was dispatched to the area of George Arden Avenue for an accident. The caller said a car ran off the road and it looked like the driver was asleep behind the wheel.

He said the woman who called pointed to a Ford Taurus that was stuck in a snow bank at the bottom of her driveway. Reay said the car was pouring smoke from the engine compartment and the motor was running. He said he reached in and shut the car off and opened the door, which woke the driver. He said the driver began by yelling at the officers on the scene as he was surrounded by empty beer cans in the car. Reay said they recovered 14 empty and three full cans of beer from the car. He said the driver appeared to be drunk and smelled of alcohol. The woman said she watched him drink a beer while he raced the engine to get out of the driveway until he wore a hole in the pavement and caused the engine to smoke before he passed out. Reay said they had to stop the field sobriety test because they feared that the driver would fall and hurt himself. John D. Hobin, 51, of 16 Oakridge Ct., Warwick, was taken to headquarters, where he blew a .113 and a .115 blood alcohol content on the breath test. He was charged with DUI and later transported to Kent Hospital for detox.
