SHOPLIFTING

An 85-year-old Johnston man was arrested at Nordstrom Rack in Warwick Mall on Feb. 20 after loss prevention at the store told police they had video of him taking a pair of Clark shoes from the shoe department and walk around the store with them until he went back to shoes and concealed the shoes in a shopping bag. The loss prevention agent told police she recognized the man from an incident on Jan. 15, when he took something from the store but managed to get away. She said the store will press charges and asked that he be barred from the store and told he will be arrested for trespassing if he returns. Louis Scungio, of 15 Winsor Ave., was taken to headquarters for processing and later released with a summons. Officer Scott Chanthaphouvong said Scungio was apologetic and he “made a bad mistake” and actually admitted he did take something from the store on Jan. 21.

Dejanique Abdullah, 20, of 337 Point St. in Providence, was charged with stealing a $26 t-shirt from the JC Penney store in Warwick Mall on Feb. 20. Loss prevention told Officer Eric Lima Abdullah took two t-shirts into the dressing room and had only one when she came out. She was stopped outside and escorted back into the store. When they asked if she knew why she was stopped, she admitted it was “because I stole something.” She was later released with a summons.

DUI AND REFUSALS

Officer Jason Cooke and several other officers received a call from dispatch about a possible drunk driver who had just left the Burger King at 2615 West Shore Road around 4:50 p.m. on Feb. 13. The caller said the driver came through the drive-thru line obviously drunk and he had a younger female child in the passenger seat. She said they tried to stop the car but the driver sped off, heading west on West Shore. Cooke said he was near Sunny Cove Drive when he saw a car matching the description and he followed it down Sunny Cove and then onto White Avenue. He said it crossed the centerline several times before he eventually stopped it on Asylum Road. He said he advised him of why he as being stopped and asked if he had been drinking and he said no, in spite of speaking with a slur and smelling of alcohol. He said the man admitted his license was suspended and also admitted he had some methadone. Another officer was interviewing the child while Cooke administered a field sobriety test, which the driver failed. He said the driver refused a preliminary breath test and the child’s mother took custody of her while the driver was taken to headquarters, where he refused a chemical test. Joseph P. Souza, 48, of 122 Asylum Rd., was charged with DUI and refusal and later released with a summons.

On Feb. 14 Officer Russell Brown was dispatched to the same Burger King around 1:20 a.m. for another call from a Burger King employee saying there was an intoxicated man in the parking lot who was trying to drive away when he went into a snow bank and then into the drive-thru lane, where he denied hitting a snow bank and tried to place his order in a voice too slurred to be understood. Brown said he got in line behind the car and watched the driver attempt to drive out of the lane into the street but was blocked by another officer’s cruiser. He said the man admitted he had been drinking but said he only had one. He said he asked the man to get out of the car for a field sobriety test and the man paused to take a bite of his sandwich before getting out. He said the driver failed the field sobriety test and was taken to headquarters, where he refused to take a breath test. William J. Britton, 34, of 2034 Carpenter Rd., Foster, was charged with DUI and refusal and was later released to a sober adult.

Officer Keri-Ann Leighton reported following an SUV on Bald Hill Road around 2 a.m. on Feb. 14 that had crossed in and out of lanes without signals. She stopped the car when it ran a red light at West Natick Road and asked the woman to take a field sobriety test after she smelled alcohol on her breath and she slurred her words. She said the driver had difficulty following the instruction for the test and ultimately failed it. Unfortunately, the passenger in the SUV, who actually owned it, was also too drunk to drive and had two dogs in the vehicle. He was allowed to have a friend come and take him and the dogs while the SUV was removed by Scorpio’s Towing. Christine Corio, 30, of 122 Elton Circle, Cranston, was charged with DUI, refusal, laned roadway violations and running a red light and later released to a sober adult.

Officer Damian Andrews reported searching for a possible drunk driver around 12 a.m. on Feb. 18 and calling in to report that when dispatch informed him the vehicle was found in a snow bank on Dayton Avenue. He said he arrived to find the driver in a daze and asked if she was drinking and she acknowledged she had been drinking a lot. He said she smelled of alcohol and staggered when she got out of the vehicle. He said she failed the field sobriety test and refused a breath test at headquarters. Jennifer Hess, 35, of 11 Brookside Dr., Cranston, was charged with DUI, refusal and failure to control her vehicle. She as later released to a sober adult.

Officer Jeremy Smith said he stopped a car that had no headlights and was crossing the centerline on Sandy Lane around 1:20 a.m. on Feb. 18. He said it pulled over at Glen Farm Court and said the driver smelled of alcohol and appeared intoxicated. He said he had to help her undo her seat belt to get out for a field sobriety test. Smith said most of the snow was cleared but she still had a problem following the instructions and failed the test. Kerry L. Clayton, 43, of 32 Everglade Ave., Warwick, was arrested and taken to headquarters, where she registered a  .249 and a .250 blood alcohol content. She was charged with DUI and later released to a sober adult.
