CURSED LUCK

A 20-year-old Warwick man told police he and his friend were going from house to house on Meadow View Avenue on March 6 looking to make some money shoveling out driveways when he decided to take a package that was left on the porch at 614 Meadow View. He said they then drove away in their red Jeep before they realized that someone was following them down Riverside Avenue when a Riverside resident backed out of his driveway and hit the Jeep, knocking it into a snow bank where it got stuck. Officer Britton Kelly reported that he arrested James House, 20, of 64 Hollis Ave. in Warwick and charged him with one count of larceny and released him with a summons for District Court.

SHOPLIFTING

Doriannie Garcia, 27, of 159 Laban St. in Providence was charged with stealing two pairs of panties and a bra from Victoria’s Secret in Warwick Mall on March 11. Witnesses told police she told the clerk she was going to her car to get her wallet to pay for the clothes but got into her car instead. She was stopped before she drove off. She was also charged as a probation violator and held for District Court.

Two women were arrested at the JC Penney store in Warwick Mall on March 12 after loss prevention told police they selected items in the store and concealed them before attempting to leave without paying for them. Kayla E. Olink, 26, of 4565 Post Rd. in East Greenwich was charged with stealing two items worth $60. Sherry A. Olink, 48, of 3174 Post Rd. in Warwick was charged with stealing $215 worth of merchandise. Kayla Olink was released with a summons. Sherry Olink was held for the bail commissioner.

Alex Valentin, 37, of 171 Mill St. in Worcester, Mass., was charged with stealing a bottle of Versace fragrance from the JC Penney store in Warwick Mall on March 10. Loss prevention told police the fragrance was worth $62. Valentin was held for the bail commissioner.

A Fall River couple was arrested at the JC Penney store in the Warwick Mall on March 3 after loss prevention agents told police she watched the couple as they went through the store gathering up various merchandise and then taking it into a dressing room where it was concealed in a large shopping bag. Loss prevention told police they recovered $795 worth of merchandise form the couple identified as Alisha Lynn Correira, 23, of 32 Emery St. and Mario Viveiros, 32, of 235 Mott St. Viveiros was later released with a summons. Correira was transported to District Court for two active warrants.

VANDALS

Officer Brian Murray reported he went to the Thrifty Car Rental office on Post Road on March 13 for a vandalized pickup truck. The manager showed Murray the broken windshield, the smashed passenger window and damage to the fender and door on the passenger side. The manager told Murray the car was untouched as of the day before. No witnesses or suspects.

A North Providence woman told police she parked her car at the Dickerson Brothers Marina on Arnold Neck Road on March 10 and came out the next morning to find that someone had “keyed” all around the vehicle and carved the four letter “F” word on the trunk. No witnesses or suspects.

DUI AND REFUSAL

Officer Sokphannareth Chea reported an accident near 900 Centerville Rd. around 10:45 p.m. on March 8. He said he checked on the first operator and determined that she would go to Kent Hospital for evaluation and then spoke with the driver of the other vehicle. Chea said the man told him he was texting and driving and caused the accident but Chea said the man smelled of alcohol and had bloodshot eyes. He asked the man to take a field sobriety test and he agreed. He said the driver failed the test and was taken to headquarters where he refused to take a breath test. Phillip L. Thomas, 42, of 25 Hayes St. in Warwick was charged with DUI and refusal and held for arraignment in the morning.

Officer Walter Larson reported he was following a car on West Shore Road because he could not read the rear license plate from 50 feet behind when he got an overwhelming smell of burnt marijuana coming from the car. He said he pulled it over and told the driver to roll down both passenger side windows and was hit with the marijuana smoke. He said the driver was very nervous and had a trembling right hand. He said there were two burnt marijuana cigarettes in the ashtray and he asked the driver if there was more marijuana in the car. He said the driver told him there was no more marijuana in the car but also said he would not give him permission to search the vehicle and advised Larson that the conversation and the traffic stop were being recorded. He also told Larson he could not search the vehicle based on the smell of marijuana. Larson said he was going to search it. He said a search of the passengers in the car did not turn up any marijuana but they found buds and twigs of marijuana throughout the entire carpet. He said the found several more marijuana butts and cigarettes. He said he asked the driver if he had any problems with his eyes before he administered a nystagmus test and the driver said he had eye surgery as a child because he “was born without ligaments in them.” He said the driver failed the field sobriety test and some more advanced tests for marijuana intoxication. Based on that, Austin J. West, 23, of 32 Scenic Dr. in Warwick was charged with DUI, refusing a breath test and possession of marijuana. He was later released to a sober adult.
