SHOPLIFTING

Officer Randy Francis responded to the J. C. Penney department store at Warwick Mall, 400 Bald Hill Rd., at approximately 12:46 p.m. on April 7 for a report of a shoplifter in custody. Francis met with a loss prevention agent, who said she observed a male subject enter the men’s department, select 16 men’s shirts, enter the fitting room in the men’s Levi department with the clothing items, then exit a few moments later with some of the shirts. The agent told Francis another loss prevention agent checked the fitting room and found several empty hangars but no merchandise left behind. The agent said she then saw the man put the shirts he had on various clothing racks. She said five shirts were determined to be missing, including a light blue polo and a coral polo. After placing all of the merchandise on clothing racks, she said the man then exited J. C. Penney via the outside entrance in the petite department, passing all points of sale and making no attempt to pay for the concealed merchandise. She said the man was then confronted by loss prevention and escorted back inside to the loss prevention office, where he was then cooperative. Francis said a total of five items in the amount of $192 was recovered from Evan S. Malley, 19, of 20 Spinnaker Ct., Narragansett, who was placed in handcuffs. Francis said a search of Malley revealed no contraband on his person, but it appeared that loss prevention had him remove items from his pockets, which included four lighters and a green leafy substance in a pill bottle, which later tested positive for marijuana. Malley was then transported to Warwick Police Department Headquarters, where he was booked and processed for one count of Felony – Shoplifting, issued a citation for Possession of Marijuana and held for the next session of the bail commissioner. Francis said Malley was previously charged with Shoplifting in March 2015 and was placed on a one-year probation.

Officer Eric Lima was dispatched to the Victoria’s Secret store at Warwick Mall, 400 Bald Hill Rd., at approximately 5:05 p.m. on April 8 for the report of a shoplifting that had occurred in the past. Lima said he met with the manager, who told him at approximately 3:39 p.m., a male and a female had entered Victoria’s Secret, walked to a corner of the store for a few seconds before splitting up from one another, acting as if they did not know each other. The manager described the female as having a light skin color with long dark hair, approximately 5’5” and in her mid- to late-20s, and the male was described as an African-American, wearing a hat, approximately 6’2” and in his early 30s. The manager said she observed the male go to the cotton panties area and handpick uncensored panties. The manager told Lima Victoria’s Secret believes the couple took a total of 12 pairs of cotton panties valued at $8.50 each, for a total value of $102, and wishes to file a complaint. Lima said the manager would review the surveillance footage and contact Warwick Police Department Headquarters when a copy was available.

MISSING TOOLS, PUNCTURED TIRES

Officer Mark Jandreau was dispatched to Keeley Ave. at approximately 10:43 p.m. on April 6 for the report of a larceny from a vehicle as well as a malicious damage. Jandreau said he spoke with a man, who said at approximately 6:30 a.m. on April 6 he went out to start his car to bring his children to school when he noticed the side door to his work van was ajar. The man told Jandreau items from the inside had been taken, including a Silver-Line drum sander and a floor sander edger, which he estimated to be worth more than $6,000. The man said this is the second time that this happened. While talking with the man, Jandreau said he requested that detectives respond to the scene and process the inside of the van due to there being footprints in the saw dust as well as possible fingerprints. Jandreau said the van interior was processed and photos were taken. He said it should also be noted that the man’s personal vehicle, which had been parked near the van, had its two passenger side tires punctured and the hood of the vehicle was scratched. Jandreau said the man was advised to call his insurance company to put in a claim for the stolen merchandise, keep a check out for the equipment online and give nearby pawnshops a call to see if someone possibly tried to sell it. The case was forwarded to Detectives for further investigation.
