ARSON

Officer Geoffrey Waldman was dispatched to Sunset Avenue at approximately 4:09 p.m. on Aug. 3 for the report of a fire in a garbage barrel. Upon arrival, Waldman met with the reporting party, who said on Aug. 2 he placed his garbage barrels out by the curb at approximately 6 p.m. He said he was sitting out on the patio in view of the barrels until approximately 8 p.m. At approximately 9 p.m., he said his neighbor came knocking on his backdoor telling him his barrel was on fire. The man said he attempted to put the fire out himself. He said it appeared it originated from the bottom of the barrel. He said he had difficulty extinguishing the fire with his garden hose, and finally was able to put it out when he used his fire extinguisher. Waldman said he observed some of the charred remains on the edge of the man’s property. The man said there wasn’t anything inside his garbage that would have ignited on its own, or any chemicals that would have accelerated the fire. He said he hasn’t had any problems with anybody in the neighborhood or noticed anybody suspicious in the area lately. He told Waldman he didn’t think it was a big issue to report it to the police. He said he notified the Department of Public Works to have them respond and exchange his barrel. DPW responded and collected the damaged barrel, but was advised he needed to file a report with the police to have a new barrel issued. The man was told he should report any suspicious fires in the future. The report was forwarded to Detectives. No suspects or evidence.

MARIJUANA

Officer Jamey Petit initiated a motor vehicle stop in the area of the Agaves Mexican Grill at 444 Quaker Lane at approximately 1:07 a.m. on Aug. 2. Petit said he stopped the vehicle after he observed it traveling northbound in the area of the Wendy’s on Quaker Lane at 69 miles per hour on radar in a posted 45 miles per hour zone. Petit said he reversed direction and caught up to the vehicle and stopped it. While speaking with the operator, later identified as Nathan D. Stone, 22, of 31 Blackrock Road, Coventry, Petit said he detected the odor of fresh marijuana to be emanating from inside of the vehicle. Petit said when he asked Stone if the vehicle contained any marijuana, he pointed to the passenger side floorboard. Petit said he observed a plastic sandwich bag containing a green leafy substance, which he recognized based on his training and experience to be marijuana. Petit said the bag was seized to be used as evidence and it was later tagged and logged in the BCI log book. Petit said Stone was issued a violation for Possession of Marijuana 1 Ounce or Less with a Rhode Island Traffic Tribunal court date. He was also issued a citation for speeding with a Warwick Municipal Court date or pay by mail fine. Stone was then released from the scene. Later at Warwick Police Department Headquarters, Petit said the green leafy substance was weighed and field-tested, which indicated a positive result for 9.8 grams of marijuana.

Upon arrival, Voyer met with the reporting party, who said he parked his brother’s motorcycle, a gold 2004 Road King MC, outside in a parking spot in front of the Food Court. He said when he was entering the Food Court, a white male with a gray T-shirt followed him inside and told him he had taken his parking spot. The man then told him he should not be driving and then entered Cox Communications. The man told Voyer the man that approached him was approximately 5’9”, heavy-set, and had short dark hair. The man said when he left the Food Court and returned to the motorcycle, he observed a large scratch on the left portion of the gas tank. Voyer said he observed the scratch as well. The man said he was unsure if his brother would want to file a complaint. Voyer said he would take a statement from the man in case his brother did want to file a complaint and spoke to the associates inside Cox Communications, who said they would attempt to locate any surveillance footage of the male subject walking into the Food Court at approximately 7:15 to 7:30 p.m.

Upon returning to his vehicle at approximately 7 a.m., he observed both of the driver’s side rear windows had been smashed. He said a chrome book laptop was missing from inside the vehicle. LAPTOPS STOLEN

Officer Michael Walker responded to the Crowne Plaza at the Crossings at 801 Greenwich Avenue at approximately 8 a.m. on July 30 for a report of two larcenies from vehicles. Walker said he observed the first vehicle and spoke with its owner, who said she had parked and secured her vehicle in the parking lot at 8 p.m. on July 29 and when she responded back out to her vehicle at approximately 7 a.m. the next day, she found that her left rear passenger window was broken. She said she also discovered her Dell laptop computer (valued at $1,200), which had been located underneath her back seat, was stolen from the vehicle. Walker said the woman did not have serial numbers at the time of the report, but she did say she wishes to press charges if her laptop is located. Walker said it should be noted that the owner of the second vehicle could not wait and had to leave the scene but will file a complaint at a later time. Walker said that Crowne Plaza security advised him that a window had been broken out of the second vehicle, with a laptop taken from the vehicle as well.

SUSPENDED LICENSE

While heading south on Bald Hill Road at 12:42 a.m. on Aug. 2, Officer Thomas Duncan said he observed a vehicle go over the yellow center line twice. Duncan said he activated his lights and initiated a traffic stop for the laned roadway violation. Upon making contact with the driver, identified as Tiffany E. Gundy, 26, of 218 Dexter Street, Apt. 106, Providence, Duncan advised her of the reason for the stop and asked for her license, insurance card and proof of insurance. Duncan said Gundy was able to provide her insurance card but no license or registration card. Duncan said he ran checks on Gundy, which came back negative for any warrants, but her license came back suspended and her registration came back expired. Duncan said Gundy was issued a warning for the laned roadway violation and she was given a summons for driving with an expired registration and given a Rhode Island Traffic Tribunal court date. She was also given a summons for driving on a suspended license and given a Third District Court date. Duncan said Gundy’s vehicle was towed from the scene.
