SEXUAL ASSAULT

Warwick Police have charged Brendan Friel, 31, with second degree sexual assault following an incident at O’Rourke’s Bar and Grill, 23 Peck Lane on Sept. 12.

Shortly before 11 p.m. on Sept. 12, Warwick Police were dispatched to the area of Emmons Avenue for a disturbing the peace call. Officers located a person who appeared to be intoxicated walking in the area that was later identified as Brendan Friel. Several persons approached the officer and identified Friel as having been involved in an altercation inside O’Rourke’s Bar and Grill.

Investigation revealed that Friel approached a 29-year-old female in the bar and engaged in conversation, which appeared to make her uncomfortable. The woman moved to a different area. While she was seated at the bar, Friel approached and shoved his hand under her bottom, inappropriately touching her buttocks. Friel then left the bar, where he was later located by officers.

Friel was arraigned in Kent County District Court on Sept. 14 and was released on $5,000 surety bail. A screening conference with the Department of Attorney General is scheduled for Oct. 19.

Interim Superintendent of Schools William Holland said Friel, a social studies teacher at Toll Gate High School, has been suspended with pay pending review of the case by the School Committee.

STOLEN VEHICLE

Officer Mark Jandreau responded to the Valero gas station at 885 Post Road at 1:35 p.m. on Sept. 20 for the report of a stolen vehicle. Upon arrival, Jandreau met with the reporting party, who said she was at Valero around 2 to 3 a.m., got a ride home, then came back to the gas station to pick up her car around 1:30 p.m. and it was gone. She said she talked to the employee, who said it wasn’t towed. She then talked to police.

The vehicle was described as a 1999 gold Acura RL with R.I. registration. The woman told Jandreau she has the only key nor did she give anyone else permission to driver her vehicle. She said the vehicle has a dent above the front passenger tire. It also has a sunroof and a bunch of Glade air fresheners and flowers hanging on the mirror.

The woman advised she wished to report her vehicle as stolen. Jandreau had the vehicle entered into the system as stolen and took an offense report, which was issued to the reporting party, who was advised to contact her insurance company.

Jandreau said he spoke with staff at the Valero gas station, which did have surveillance at the rear of the building, but they didn’t know how to retrieve the video. Jandreau said he would return at a later date to retrieve the video. The case was forwarded to Detectives for follow-up. No suspects.

SMASHED

WINDSHIELD

Officer Timothy Lipka responded to Tunis Road at 7 a.m. on Sept. 21 to meet with a resident about a malicious damage. Upon arrival, Lipka met with the man, who said someone had thrown a pumpkin through the windshield of his vehicle. Lipka said he observed the vehicle to have a smashed windshield with spider cracking throughout and a pumpkin in the street. Lipka said the pumpkin was not smashed, however, its size was consistent with the damage to the windshield.

Lipka said the man wishes to press charges and provided a written statement. He said it should be noted the man advised he did not hear anything suspicious through the night and that he has no issues with neighbors or juveniles in the area and was unsure who could have caused the damage.

KEYED

Upon arrival, Jandreau met with the reporting party, who said his vehicle was parked in his driveway at approximately 12 a.m. and that when he awoke the next morning, he went out to his vehicle around 10:30 and noticed the passenger side wheel well area as well as the front of the hood had been keyed.

Jandreau completed the offense report and issued it to the man, who was advised to contact his insurance company with the report number. Jandreau said the report was taken to document the damage to the vehicle. No suspects.

BURNED SWEATSHIRT

Officer Adam Arico was dispatched to the Ponaug Marina at 289 Arnold’s Neck Drive at 8:59 p.m. on Sept. 23 for a reported malicious damage. Dispatch advised the reporting party was stating that someone had thrown a lit sweatshirt onto his boat, and the sweatshirt was no longer on fire.

Upon arrival, Arico made contact with the reporting party, who said he was last on his boat on Sept. 21. When he left the boat, it was in good condition. He said he came down on Sept. 23 and found a burned sweatshirt thrown into the cockpit of his boat, a 1991 34-foot Silverton convertible boat.
