MALICIOUS DAMAGE

On Sept. 28 at 3:37 p.m., Officer Manuel Pacheco was dispatched to the Boyd Baseball Field located behind the Warwick Public Library at 600 Sandy Lane for the report of a malicious damage. Dispatch advised that retired Major Thomas Nye was working security at the library and had called in, stating that two juveniles were hitting baseballs over the fence of the ball field, causing damage to vehicles in the library parking lot.

Upon arrival, Officer Pacheco located the involved juveniles walking down Glen Drive, carrying a milk crate of baseballs and two baseball bats. One of the males, who Pacheco knew through prior contacts, said they had just been hitting baseballs at Boyd Field, but had left after subjects from the library parking lot began yelling. Nye then arrived on scene and identified the two males as being the involved subjects. Pacheco said he then transported one of the males back to the library parking lot, while the other one walked with Nye, who pointed out a vehicle with its rear window shattered.

Pacheco said two witnesses were on scene at the library, who both identified one of the males as the same one they had seen on the night of Sept. 25 at approximately 5:30 to be hitting baseballs with other juveniles on the field. They said several of the balls came well onto the library parking lot that night, during which time a ball had hit a vehicle. After being yelled at, they said the subjects ran. Both witnesses identified the same male to be hitting balls from the field that day into the library parking lot, causing rear window damage to one of the vehicles.

When one of the males was asked, he said he had been told on Sept. 25 not to be hitting baseballs in the field, as it was clear he and his friends were too big for the field, as they were hitting balls well outside its limits. Pacheco said it should be noted the ball had to travel over the outfield fence, as well as through a grass median of about 50 feet separating the field and the parking lot, and then over a 6-foot chain-link fence before entering the parking lot.

Based on the witness statements, it was determined one of the males was intentionally hitting baseballs into the parking lot, which caused damage to vehicles. As a result, he was charged with one count of Vandalism/Malicious Injury to Property and taken into custody. He was then transported to Warwick Police headquarters, where he was placed in a cell before being picked up. Pacheco said the male was advised he would be contacted by the department’s Youth Services Division regarding a future court date.

SHOPLIFTING

On Oct. 7 at 3:20 p.m., Officer Stephen Major was dispatched to the J. C. Penney store at Warwick Mall at 400 Bald Hill Road in reference to a shoplifter in custody.

Upon arrival, Major met with a loss prevention officer, who said she observed a male with a female and a small child. She said the male concealed what was determined to be five items, worth a total value of $91, in the carriage the child was in. She said the female then left the area and the male continued around the store and then passed all points of purchase, making no attempt to pay and exited the store. He was stopped outside and escorted to the loss prevention office, where he was taken into custody by Warwick Police.

Major said the male was identified as Michael P. Campagnone, 28, of 21 Hard Point Road, Apt. #D125, Cranston. A video of surveillance footage was entered into evidence at Warwick Police headquarters. Campagnone was transported to headquarters and released on a District Court Summons for one count of Shoplifting – Misdemeanor.

LARCENY

On Oct. 6 at 4:17 p.m., Officer Jason Cooke responded to Hagerstown Road for the report of a larceny. Upon arrival, Cooke met with the victim, who said at approximately 6:15 that morning, he noticed some items in his truck were rummaged through. Upon thoroughly checking his truck, he noticed that a flashlight and a knife were missing. He said he checked his wife’s car as well but it did not have those items. He said he left his vehicle unlocked overnight and he knew those items were in there when he parked his vehicle on Oct. 5 around 7 p.m. He described the items as a black Smith & Wesson Homeland Security 6-inch Tanto knife valued at $30 and a black flashlight valued at $20.

The man said he did not observe any suspicious activity overnight. Cooke said the man completed and signed a statement, which was entered into Records. No suspects.
