Man charged with bribing public official

A Cranston man has been indicted on a count of bribing a public official in connection with payments allegedly made in exchange for approval of a liquor license for a Providence dining establishment.

The secret indictment against Raymond P. Hugh, 48, of 75 Mayfield Ave., was reported out by the Providence County Grand Jury last week, according to the office of Attorney General Peter Kilmartin. Hugh’s arraignment is scheduled for Nov. 18 in Superior Court.

It is alleged that Hugh, a former owner of the Shark Sushi Bar and Grill, in 2008 made payments to Gordon Fox – who was then vice chairman of the Providence Board of Licenses – “as an inducement and reward for moving and voting to approve a liquor license application” for the establishment, according to a release from Kilmartin’s office.

Fox – who went on to serve as speaker of the Rhode Island House of Representatives – is presently serving a three-year sentence after pleading guilty to receiving more than $50,000 in exchange for providing assistance with the Shark Bar liquor license, along with other charges.

Hugh has publicly denied the charges.

Police ID suspect in theft of coats

An arrest warrant has been issued for one of the suspects in the brazen Oct. 21 theft of $4,200 worth of coats from the REI store in Chapel View.

According to Cranston police, Sharesse Lashwanda Dennis, 42, of East Providence, has been identified as one of the two women seen in surveillance video taking 14 North Face jackets from the store. Police also said she “appears to be involved in a high-value shoplifting ring” that may be operating in Rhode Island, Massachusetts, and Connecticut.

Police have not identified the second woman involved. Anyone with information regarding Dennis or her location is asked to contact Detectives Joseph Hopkins or PJ Bessette, or to submit an anonymous tip through the department’s website, cranstonpoliceri.com.
