Police plan to step up DUI patrols

Drunk-driving patrols will be increased over the Thanksgiving holiday weekend as part of a statewide initiative, Cranston police have announced.

The stepped-up enforcement comes in conjunction with the state DUI Task Force’s Operation Blue RIPTIDE. The task force consists of state police and local departments in all of Rhode Island’s cities and towns.

Funding is being provided through the Rhode Island Department of Transportation’s Office on Highway Safety.

A press release from Chief of Police Col. Michael Winquist indicated police will be targeting “high traffic, high incident areas to detect and apprehend impaired drivers” during some of the year’s busiest travel days. Members of the public are asked to report reckless of potentially impaired drivers by calling 911.

“Please be responsible and use a designated driver if you choose to drink over the holidays,” Winquist states in the release. “Our officers will exercise zero tolerance when encountering impaired drivers. We would much rather make arrests than respond to a fatal crash.”

More information is available by contacting Capt. Vincent McAteer of the department’s Office of Community Outreach at 401-477-5127.

The incident in question occurred in May 2015, when Providence police received a report of a stolen credit card. An investigation found the card was used between 7 p.m. and 9 p.m. on May 28 to make purchases at several stores in Cranston and Providence.

Anyone with information regarding the case is asked to contact Detective John Cardone at 401-942-2211, ext. 5047, or to submit an anonymous tip via the department’s website, cranstonpoliceri.com.

Anyone with information regarding the case is asked to contact Detective Paul “PJ” Bessette at 401-942-2211, ext. 5096, or to submit an anonymous tip via cranstonpoliceri.com.
