SHOPLIFTING

On April 26 at 9:12 p.m., Officer Quentin Tavares was dispatched to Dick’s Sporting Goods at 1350 Bald Hill Road for the report of a shoplifting that had occurred a half-hour prior.

Upon arrival, Tavares spoke with an employee, who said he observed a subject enter the store at approximately 8:30 and selected two pairs of pants and a pair of baseball pants, placed them in a shopping basket and attempted to exit the store. The employee said a store associate asked the man if she could assist him and the man said he wanted something off the top rack. As the associate proceeded to obtain a pole, the man went around the counter, exited the store, entered a vehicle, described as reddish in color, and fled the area.

The employee described the subject as a white male, in his mid-20s, and wearing a gray sweatshirt. He said the man made no attempt to pay for the merchandise before exiting the store. The total value of the merchandise stolen was $120.60.

WARRANT & MARIJUANA

On April 23 at 4:50 p.m., Officer Jacob Elderkin was on direct patrol of Motel 6, 20 Jefferson Boulevard, when he observed a red 1999 Toyota Corolla bearing R.I. registration to have two spider-web type cracks in the front windshield. The vehicle was occupied by one male party, who was in the passenger seat.

Upon running a check on the registration, it came back that the registered owner had an active warrant for his arrest. Elderkin advised Dispatch he would observe the vehicle, waiting to see if the registered owner would return to it. Officer T.J. Tavares responded to Elderkin’s location shortly after.

While Tavares was en route, Elderkin said he observed the front passenger get out of the vehicle, and upon seeing Elderkin’s marked patrol unit, the subject hurried his pace in an attempt to run into the Motel 6 front building but Elderkin was able to stop him without incident. Elderkin said the man was holding a blue solo cup, which contained eight individually wrapped baggies of what later field tested positive for being marijuana. The man was identified by his R.I. ID card as Christopher Hernandez, 32. Elderkin advised Hernandez police were looking for the registered owner of the vehicle and Hernandez said that male party is a good friend of his and was actually in the lobby area of the Motel 6, purchasing a room for the evening. Hernandez was patted down and then secured in a cruiser.

Elderkin entered the lobby area of Motel 6, where he immediately saw the male party he was searching for. The man was identified as Armando Guerrero, 36, of 11 Rutherglen Avenue, Providence. Elderkin said he was the registered owner of the 1999 Toyota Corolla. Guerrero was asked to step from the lobby, which he did without incident. He was immediately taken into custody and placed in Tavares’ cruiser.

Elderkin said the warrant for Guerrero was an affidavit warrant out of Providence. Providence Police were contacted and confirmed they would take custody of Guerrero. Guerrero was then transported back to Warwick Police headquarters, where he was printed, photographed and processed. Providence police later picked him up and the warrant was removed from RILETS. Elderkin said the vehicle was left in the parking lot, as Guerrero made arrangements for his mother to pick it up.

Hernandez was issued a summons and given a Rhode Island Traffic Tribunal court date for being in possession of marijuana – 1 ounce or less. The suspect marijuana was brought to Warwick Police headquarters, where it field-tested positive and weighed 7.1 grams. It was tagged and logged into Evidence.

WHY THEY CAUGHT

On May 2 at 7:30 a.m., Officer Aaron Steere was on patrol in the area of Jefferson Boulevard and Jefferson Park Road when he observed a vehicle, described as a white 2009 Dodge with Texas registration, exiting the Motel 6 parking lot. As the vehicle pulled out lot, Steere noticed the rear bumper had a Texas temporary tag affixed to the rear. Based on the fact that the vehicle had two different registration plates, Steere conducted a motor vehicle stop in the parking lot of the Mobil gas station at 15 Jefferson Blvd.

Steere made contact with the operator, who identified himself through a Honduras identification card as Norlan Dominguez, 30, of 707 South Washington Street, Attleboro, Mass. Dominguez said he currently did not have a license in the United States. He said he is in the country doing construction and is currently staying at the Comfort Inn in Attleboro, located at 707 South Washington St.

Upon running checks on Dominguez, it was confirmed he did not have an active license in the U.S. Based on this, Dominguez was taken into custody and transported to Warwick Police headquarters. The vehicle was later towed from the scene.

Upon arrival at police headquarters, Dominguez was processed. It was learned through an ICE check that Norlan Dominguez had previously been removed from the country in 2005 out of Loredo, Texas. Steere contacted the Providence ICE office and informed them of the arrest and the FBI report about previously being removed from the country in 2005. Providence ICE advised they did not have a current detainer for Dominguez.

Dominguez was charged with Driving Without/Expired License and Operating Unregistered Motor Vehicle due to the fact that the Texas registration had expired in December 2015, which was confirmed through the Texas DMV. Dominguez was later transported to Third District Court for arraignment.
