DAMAGED GUTTERS

On May 9 at 9:50 p.m., officers were dispatched to the Apponaug Library for the report that a male was ripping the gutters from the back of the building. Dispatch advised that the reporting party was by the City Hall annex and was witnessing the subject, who was described as a Hispanic male with a long ponytail and black leather jacket, who was ripping the gutters off the building.

Officer Christian Vargas was in the area and responded. Upon arrival to the back of the library, Vargas saw that a set of gutters had been ripped off the back of the building. The gutters were left unseen piled under a bush, as the suspect was apparently unable to take them at the time.

Officer Joshua Myer later advised he had a suspect that matched the description at Apponaug Four Corners. Myer said the man was wearing a leather coat and he had a ponytail. When Myer stopped the man and asked him where he was coming from, he said he was coming from Pawtucket Avenue and he had a fight with his girlfriend. Myer informed the man there was no Pawtucket Avenue in Warwick, to which he then said he was coming from North Main Street and he was walking to Cumberland Farms.

Due to the fact he fit the description of the suspect, Myer patted the man down and placed him in the back of his patrol vehicle. Soon after, other officers arrived on scene. Officer Vargas was able to identify the witness, a Warwick city worker, and brought her to Myer’s location, where she was able to positively identify the suspect as the individual that had damaged the gutters at the Apponaug Library.

The suspect was later identified as Joseph A. Lasalle, 39, of 32 Williams Street, Pawtucket. Myer transported Lasalle to Warwick Police headquarters, where he was booked and processed. Lasalle was later released on a summons for one count of vandalism/malicious injury to property with a Third District Court date.

VEHICLE LARCENIES

On May 2 at 6:27 p.m., Officer Eric Lima was dispatched to a residence on Crestwood Road for the report of a larceny from a vehicle.

Upon arrival, Lima met with the reporting party, who said on May 1 at approximately 2:30 p.m., he had parked his truck in his driveway. Then, the next day around 8:30 a.m., he noticed a change jar was missing and the center console was open, with papers strewn about the passenger’s seat. He also said his Garmin GPS (valued at approximately $200) and $70 in U.S. currency was missing from inside the vehicle. The man then returned into his residence and spoke with his wife, who checked her vehicle and discovered it appeared it had also been entered, with possibly some assorted change missing. The man said he wished to file a complaint.

Lima said it should be noted both vehicles did not have their vehicle doors locked upon their last having been left in the driveway. The case will be forwarded to detectives for follow-up.

DUI & REFUSAL

On May 5 at 9:35 p.m., while on patrol Officers Christopher Lo and Walter Larson were dispatched to a DUI in progress. The vehicle was described as a silver sedan bearing R.I. registration. The reporting party said the operator was possibly intoxicated. Officers were advised to respond to the area of Centerville Road at the Route 95 on/off ramp. Officers later received another call from a second caller, informing them the vehicle was now passing Kent Hospital and weaving into oncoming traffic. Shortly after this, the vehicle was headed toward Apponaug from the area of Kent Hospital and it had struck another vehicle.

Officer Barlow was the first to arrive on scene and Officer Lo was second on scene, where they began speaking with the operator of the struck vehicle, a red Ford Fusion. The front end of that vehicle was touching the front end of the suspect vehicle, a silver Nissan Altima. Officer Lo observed the air bags in the victim’s vehicle had deployed and called Rescue.

Officer Larson approached the driver’s side of the suspect vehicle, which was facing southeast in the northeast travel lane with all four tires over the double yellow line and front bumper cracked with the hood dented up. When Larson made contact with the operator and asked for her license, registration and insurance, she began to fumble with her wallet and pocketbook, making clumsy moves as she attempted to open each part. After waiting for about 45 seconds for any form of documentation, the woman was asked to step out of the vehicle. Larson said he noticed her eyes were bloodshot and he could smell the odor of alcohol coming from the interior of the vehicle.

The operator was later identified as Christina Kidd, 36, of 22 Cameron Court, Warwick. After stepping out of the vehicle, she turned back toward the vehicle and stumbled backwards toward the curb. Larson put his arm out to catch her and guide her back until she regained her balance. Larson then administered a series of standardized field sobriety tests, during which Kidd had “a very significant side to side sway” and Larson again had to put his arm out to catch her to prevent her from falling.

Kidd was taken into custody and transported to Warwick Police headquarters, where she refused to submit to a chemical test. Kidd was processed and charged with refusal to submit to a chemical test 1st offense, failure to maintain proper control of vehicle and laned roadway violations. Due to the fact that she could not produce positive insurance identification, Kidd was issued a summons for operating motor vehicle without evidence of insurance. Kidd was also issued a summons for DUI 1st offense B.A.C. unknown. She was released to the care of her husband.
