LARCENY

Officer David Thompson reported a larceny from a residence on Timberline Road on April 10. The homeowner told police he got his air compressor out of his garage on April 3 and used it to clean off his garden tractor and then put it back inside. He said he went back to the garage on April 6 to use the compressor to inflate the tires on his grandchildren’s bicycles and saw it was gone. He said he took a closer look and saw that a miter saw, a circular saw and a nail gun were also missing. He told police he suspected they were taken sometime between April 4 and April 6. He told police the tools were worth around $275. No suspects or witnesses.

Officer Daniel DiMaio reported that a Chepachet woman told him she left her car at the Warwick Animal Hospital parking lot at 1950 Elmwood Ave. on April 9 and returned to it the next day to learn that it had been rummaged through and several items were missing, among them several credit cards, a wallet, a flowered bag, various CDs and a bag of clothes worth a total of $150 were gone. No witnesses or suspects.

SHOPLIFTING

A Cranston woman and a companion of hers from Johnston were arrested at Macy’s in Warwick Mall on April 10 after loss prevention at the store told police they selected 84 items from their store and concealed the cosmetics in a bag before they left the store without paying for them. Macy’s said the items added up to $1,426 in merchandise. Kerry E. Raso, 43, of 32 Audubon St., Johnston, was charged with shoplifting and possession of heroin and cocaine. She was also charged with violating bail from another charge and was held for arraignment at the ACI. Lisa Pafume, 47, of 195 Concord Ave., Cranston, was charged with shoplifting and later released with a summons for District Court.

An East Providence woman was detained at Macy’s on April 8 after loss prevention said she attempted to flee from the parking lot after being seen concealing $317.96 worth of merchandise concealed on her person. Melissa A. Forand, 25, of 24 Cole St., was charged with shoplifting at headquarters and later released with a summons for District Court. A loss prevention officer told Officer Stephen Major that Forand damaged one of the items and they wanted restitution for it because it was now not fit for sale.

Amy B. Grant, 38, of 11 South St., West Warwick, was arrested at Sears at Rhode Island Mall on April 5 after loss prevention told police they began to watch her because she appeared to be impaired and kept dozing off even as she was standing up. They said they followed her around the store as she removed price tags and concealed merchandise under her clothes and then stopped her when she stepped out of the store without paying for the goods. Officer Nicolas DiNardo reported he found two crack pipes in her purse but no actual drugs other than one pill she had no prescription for. A check on Grant’s BCI revealed an outstanding warrant for failure to appear in District Court. She was later transported to the ACI to await arraignment the following Monday morning.

Marlene H. Groves, 53, of 55 Georgia Ave., North Kingstown, was arrested at Macy’s on April 11 after loss prevention at Macy’s gave Officer Stephen Major statements saying they saw her select and conceal some merchandise and changed the price tags on other items before cashing out for much less that they were originally marked. They told Major she either took or reduced merchandise to the tune of $492.50 before they stopped her outside. She was later released from headquarters with a summons.

DUI AND REFUSAL

Several officers were dispatched to Cottage Street around 10:45 p.m. on April 4 for a rollover accident involving a pickup truck and a subsequent fight involving several men. They said they found a pickup truck resting on its roof in a yard with a man later identified as the driver sitting on the curb. Two men told police they heard the loud screeching of tires and then saw the pickup truck flip over into the yard and ran to the truck to offer assistance. They said the man who was driving the truck was attempting to leave the scene before police arrived so they subdued him and held him for police. They said they were holding the man when another man ran up and attempted to kick them and threatened them for detaining the driver, but that man was gone before police arrived. Other witnesses said they saw the pickup truck speeding down Cottage Street, heading towards a man standing in the street before it veered away to avoid hitting the pedestrian and lost control and flipped. Police said the driver of the pickup appeared to be under the influence and smelled of alcohol and admitted he had been drinking. He also said he was the only person in the truck and said nothing about a man standing in the street. Rescue arrived and placed the driver on a board for transport to Rhode Island Hospital accompanied by a police officer. That police officer later stated that the driver was read his rights on the way to the hospital and made a phone call before he informed him that he would refuse a chemical test. Joseph A. Hughes, 23, of 30 Betsy Williams Dr., was charged with DUI, refusal and traffic violations based on witness statements. No other charges were filed against witnesses and the alleged assailant of the witness was not found.

Officer Matthew Moretti reported he was traveling south on Post Road around 11:30 p.m. on April 6 when a car cut in front of him to go into the parking lot of the Grid Iron Ale House and Grill at 1599 Post Rd. He said he had to slam on his brakes to avoid hitting the car. He said he approached the driver and asked him if he knew why he was being questioned and the man appeared to be intoxicated but said he “cut the turn too close.” He said he administered a field sobriety test on the driver and he failed it. He said a preliminary breath test indicated a .134 blood alcohol content on the portable breath tester. Moretti said David Dacruz, 54, of 185 Pettaconsett Ave., Warwick, refused a second breath test at headquarters and was charged with DUI, refusal and failing to use a turn signal. He was later released to a sober adult.

Officer Timothy Marshall reported he was dispatched to the Gulf Express at 1196 West Shore Rd. around 4:35 p.m. on April 4 for a report of a man who told dispatch he hit the building and “It woke him up.” He said he arrived to find Fire Rescue on the scene and a Ford pickup truck about four feet from the wall of the building with fresh front end damage and a scattering of bricks on the ground and a crack in the wall of the building. He said the driver explained that he drove into the mini mart to buy some cigarettes when his sandals got “caught up” with his feet, causing him to hit the wall of the building. He said he asked the driver if he was injured and he said he was not. He said he then asked him if he could take a field sobriety test and he said he had arthritis in his hip and vertigo. He said the man smelled strongly of alcohol but took instructions for the field test anyway. Marshall said he cancelled the test when it was apparent the man could not follow instructions. He said the driver was taken to headquarters, where he became increasingly more combative and uncooperative. He said he refused to acknowledge he understood his rights, refused to make a phone call and refused to take a breath test but refused to sign the refusal form. Edward Colvin, 68, of 116 Damon Ave., was charged with DUI, refusal and held until he could be released to a sober adult.
