WARNING

Officer Eric Lima went to the parking lot of the Wal-Mart on Bald Hill Road on Aug. 28 for a report of a larceny. A woman said she came back to her car and found a note on her windshield that said, “Thanks for the new shoes. Next time, don’t leave your doors unlocked [Expletive].” She told Lima she looked through the car and could not find anything was missing. She said things had been moved around but nothing was missing. Lima said he went back on patrol and got a call from the woman later to tell him her aunt confessed that she left the note as a joke and reminder to her not to leave her windows open.

LEFT LOCKED

Officer Adam Arico reported another car had been gone through at a Commodore Avenue address on Aug. 29. A woman said she returned to her car in the driveway that day and found the driver’s side window smashed and a number of her things gone over. Arico said there were signs of someone rummaging through the car but nothing, including an expensive pair of sunglasses and a purse worth $500, was taken. He said there were smudge marks on the car. Some candy bags and a perfume bottle were taken to be processed for fingerprints. There were two similar scenes that night on nearby streets.

MISSING PIPES

A man from Hope told police he closed on a house on Ironwood Court on Aug. 27 and when he returned to the house the next day, he found that all of the copper pipes from the basement were missing. Police found pry marks on the doors and found the rear slider unlocked. There were no suspects or witnesses. Detectives were called to process the scene. The man said it would cost $3,000 to replace the pipes.

SHOPLIFTING

Loss prevention at the Wal-Mart store on Bald Hill Road told police they followed a suspicious couple around the store after they saw them open a package containing a CD player and conceal the player in the purse and then separate before the loss prevention agent followed the woman out of the store after she left without paying for the concealed player. He said he stopped her outside the garden shop and led her back into the store, where he recovered the $129.87 player and a $1.88 package of Little Debbie Fancy Cakes. Michelle S. Berenson, 34, of 28 Diamond St. in Providence, was charged with shoplifting and told not to return to the store or be arrested for trespassing. She was later released with a summons.

Loss prevention at Kohl’s in the Rhode Island Mall told police they saw a woman take jewelry from their display and conceal the items in her purse. They said they stopped Robin Morgan, 59, of 289 Woodville Rd. in Hopkinton, and held her for police. She was charged with stealing $165.40 worth of jewelry and later released with a summons at the scene because she had physical handicaps.

DUI AND REFUSAL

Officer Keri-Ann Leighton-Fialho reported stopping a car for operating erratically on Bald Hill Road around 1:40 a.m. on Aug. 29. She said the operator smelled of alcohol and appeared to be intoxicated. She said the driver failed a field sobriety test and was taken to headquarters where she blew a .146 and a .144 blood alcohol content on the breath test. Linda L. Hunnicutt, 22, of 7 DiMasi Ct. in West Warwick, was charged with DUI and laned roadway violations and later released to a sober adult.

Officer Jacob Elderkin reported he was dispatched to an accident with no injuries at 541 Main Ave. around 10:40 p.m. on Sept. 2. One of the drivers involved said another driver hit the rear end of her car and then attempted to flee the scene but was stopped by a third car who blocked the attempted escape. Elderkin said the suspect was removed from the car and given a field sobriety test. He said the man smelled of alcohol and appeared to be drunk. Elderkin said he arrested the driver on suspicion of drunk driving after he almost fell over on the one-leg stand. Joseph Stanford, 31, of 311 Lincoln St. in North Providence was taken to headquarters where he refused to take a breath test. He was charged with attempted hit and run, refusal, DUI and tailgating.
