EMBEZZLEMENT

A Warwick man was charged with embezzling from the UPS facility on Plan Way on Sept. 13. A manager told Officer James Vible security stopped an employee on his way out of the facility because he had three cell phones on his person, which was deemed suspicious. He said they questioned the man and he admitted he took three Galaxy S4 phones out of their packaging and was taking them because he was “hurting for money” and intended to sell two of them. He said he smashed the third one because he only wanted the battery. The phones were to be delivered to customers that day. Vible said he took Justin D. Chase, 19, of 79 Palace Ave., Warwick, to headquarters, where he was charged and then taken to District Court for arraignment. The three phones were worth a total of $1,200.

SHOPLIFTING

Warwick Police were dispatched to the Sears store at Rhode Island Mall on Sept. 17 for a shoplifting in progress around 2:30 p.m. Officer Darren Parrillo located the subject in a wooded area near CCRI and also found two boxes containing cologne from the store that cost $59.99 each. Loss prevention at the store told police they saw the man conceal the boxes in his “baggy” pants before walking out without paying for them. David J. Marchand, 33, of 250 Rand St., Central Falls, was charged with felony shoplifting for being a habitual offender and with two warrants for failure to appear in District Court. He was held for arraignment.

A West Warwick woman was arrested for stealing $68.40 worth of jewelry from Kohl’s at Rhode Island Mall on Sept. 17. Loss prevention told police they saw her remove the packaging from the items and then conceal them before leaving without paying for them. Deborah L. Case, 54, of 30 Natick Rd., was charged at headquarters and then held for the bail commissioner.

Edwin Sandoval, 34, of 258 Killingly St., Providence, was charged with stealing an MP3 player from the Best Buy store on Universal Boulevard on Sept. 13. Loss prevention told police they arrested him after he left the store without paying for the player he concealed down his pants. He was taken to headquarters, where he was charged with shoplifting and told he was no longer welcome at Best Buy and would be charged with trespassing if he returned.

Nicholas J. Paiva, 26, of 56 Pemberton St., Providence, was charged with shoplifting at the Walmart store on Post Road on Sept. 14. Loss prevention told police he used a razor to cut the locking tag on a cell phone in the store and walked out without paying for the phone. Police said they arrived as he was walking out of the store and arrested him. The man with Paiva was not arrested, but he was told if he came back to the store he would be arrested for trespassing.

Deana V. Wisniewski, 18, of 120 Dogwood Dr., West Warwick, was charged with shoplifting at the Sears store at Rhode Island Mall on Sept. 14 after loss prevention told police she left the store without paying for $116 worth of clothing. She was later released from headquarters with a summons.

IMPORTANT CALL

Officer Quentin Tavares reported tracing a shoplifting suspect to a Pawtucket address on Sept. 9. Loss prevention at Sears told Tavares the man got into a Mercury Mountaineer and drove off before they could stop him with a pair of Timberland boots worth $129.99 that he hurried out of the store without paying for. Tavares said he later got a call from a man who said he used the Mountaineer that day to go to work but lent it to a co-worker who went out to get lunch for the friends and came back without any mention of being at Sears or the boots. He said the co-worker called him later and he explained the situation to him. The suspect said he would come to headquarters three days later with his attorney. Tavares said he did come in with his attorney the next day and was left to confer with his lawyer, Jeffrey Pine of Pine & Lynch Law Offices. He said Pine indicated he was through talking and Tavares could come back into the room to get a statement from the suspect.

Tavares said the suspect admitted he took his friend’s vehicle to Rhode Island Mall and went in the Sears store and did select a pair of Timberland boots, but there was no cashier in the shoe department so he continued shopping while he held onto the boots. He said he then got “an important phone call and walked out of the store without paying for the boots.” Tavares said the suspect, Patrick J. Hollywood, 48, of 23 Princeton Ave., told him he didn’t realize he hadn’t paid for the boots until he learned a policeman had called his friend about it. Tavares said Hollywood told him he still had possession of the boots and that he would return them to Sears “at a later date.” Tavares said Hollywood apparently had no priors so he was charged with shoplifting and later released into the custody of his attorney.

DUI AND REFUSAL

Officer Aaron Kay reported stopping a car around 2 a.m. on Sept. 8 for driving erratically and over the centerline on Post Road south. He said the driver smelled strongly of alcohol and appeared to be intoxicated. He said he gave the driver a field sobriety test that he failed and he was taken to headquarters, where he registered a .151 blood alcohol content on the breath test. Derek T. Mills, 26, of 60 Lexington St., North Providence, was charged with DUI and later released to a sober adult.

Officer James Wenneman reported a hit and run accident near Pilgrim Parkway around 4:25 p.m. on Sept. 12. Dispatch said a Chevy Blazer had hit a lemonade truck near Warwick and Falcon Avenues and did not stop. Wenneman said he then heard that the Blazer was stopped on Sumner Avenue. He said the driver looked like he had been drinking and smelled strongly of alcohol. He said he gave the driver a field sobriety test that he failed and he took Ryan Guziejka, 19, of 121 Owen Ave., Pawtucket, to headquarters, where he refused to take a breath test. He was charged with DUI, refusal and leaving the scene of an accident and later released to a sober adult.
