A man who was arrested for shoplifting at the Kohl’s store in the Rhode Island Mall on Oct. 4 was arrested again at the Wal-Mart store next door on Oct. 8. Richard Spetka, 27, of 43 George St. in Providence was charged with stealing a watch, a wallet and children’s accessories worth a total of $154.98 at Kohl’s on Oct. 4 after loss prevention stopped and recovered the goods from his bulging hoodie as he exited the store. He was booked and later released with a summons.

Warwick police went to the Wal-Mart on Oct. 8 and again heard loss prevention personnel describe how Spetka was acting suspiciously before he concealed two DVDs, “The Hangover Part 2” and “After Earth” and a Blu-Ray disc player worth a total of $117.92 in his jacket and walked out without paying for them. He was again released with a summons after being booked at headquarters.

JOYRIDE

Officer David Waddington reported he was on patrol around 3:15 a.m. on Oct. 5 when he saw a golf cart being driven erratically on Bellows Road. He said he pulled the cart over and asked the driver if he had a driver’s license. He said the man did not a have a license or any identification on him and said he was new to the area and was just out for a “joyride” and was now trying to find his way home to 43 Whiten Ave. Waddington said he ran a check on Walter S. Garbecki, 28, and learned he had a suspended license and two prior DUI arrests within the past year. Garbecki was arrested and charged with driving on a suspended license, driving a prohibited vehicle for public roads, leaving the lane of travel, wrong side of the road, no lights after dark and not wearing a seat belt.

DRUGGED

Officer Nadine Pallini reported she went to the Showcase Cinema on Quaker Lane around 9 p.m. on Oct. 5 to take custody of an intoxicated woman who was disorderly. She said Capt. Joseph Coffey told her she needed to go to Kent Hospital for detox because she had been taking hydrocodone with alcohol. She said the woman refused to relinquish her purse to be checked for weapons and Pallini had to battle with her for it, which resulted in Pallini being kicked in the face before she was subdued and taken to Kent. Pallini said she found a pillbox with six hydrocodone tablets and a generic Xanex and some marijuana. Tina Crofton, 50, of 280 Austin Rd. in North Kingstown was charged with assault on Pallini, disorderly conduct and possession of controlled substances. She was left in the care of the hospital staff and later charged and released on $1,000 surety bail.

CAUGHT IN THE ACT

Officer Adam Arico reported he was dispatched to Rita Street for a larceny in progress around 2:35 a.m. on Oct. 8. Dispatch said one of the suspects was being detained and Arico arrived to find the suspect pinned down by two men. He said the suspect was sweating profusely and bleeding from a small cut on his forehead and numerous small cuts on his legs. He said he asked the suspect what was going on and he admitted that he and his friend were going through parked cars to steal change. Arica said he put the suspect in his cruiser and other officers arrived to look for the second suspect. In the meantime, his suspect complained of head pain and nausea and began to vomit. He called Rescue to treat the prisoner and then spoke with the witnesses. He said a homeowner told him his wife woke him and told him there was someone in his truck and he grabbed his pistol and ran outside. He said he told both men to get on the ground but only one of the suspects did and the other one fled through a neighbor’s yard. He said the man got up again as police were approaching and ran into the woods, where his neighbor caught him at the marsh at the end of the road and detained him after they fought and struggled. Gunner Olson, 19, of 48 Weaver St. in West Warwick was taken to Kent Hospital for a possible concussion and was later taken back to headquarters and booked for three counts of larceny from vehicles. Arico said about $60 in change was found in Olsen’s bag.

Loss prevention from the store identified Joshua Flanagan, 24, of 79 Wood St. as the man they saw walking out of the store with an armful of clothing. They said one of the agents confronted him at his car and he gave back the goods as Warwick police were on their way to the lot. Stop leaving valuables lying around in unlocked stores. It only entices that certain kind of "citizen", if you know what I mean.
