MISSING TRAILER

Officer Britton Kelly reported the theft of a boat trailer from a house on Brendard Avenue on Oct. 29. The owner said he noticed that day that an 18-foot, single-axle galvanized trailer went missing from his yard. He said the last time he remembers seeing it was on Oct. 25. He also said the taillight lens was broken and partially missing below the midline. He told Kelly that other than the damaged taillight, there were no particularly outstanding marks on the trailer. He said there were no witnesses or suspects and the trailer cost $500.

HOT BIKE

Officer Christopher Lo reported he stopped a pickup on Oakland Beach Avenue for going the wrong way on the one-way portion of the street and ran a VIN check on a motorcycle in the back of the truck and it came back as stolen out of Lincoln. He said Lincoln police confirmed that it was still out as stolen and he read the three men who were with the truck their Miranda rights. The driver of the truck told him that the two other men asked him to help them pick up the motorcycle that they bought at Iggy’s. He said the two men he was with gave a man some money and they loaded the bike onto the truck. He said he did not know who was selling the bike or what they were paying for it. He said the two other men told him they were partners on the bike and that they saw it for sale on Craigslist.com and bought it for $500. He said he never got the keys for the bike or a bill of sale because he intended to use it for parts and not register it. He said he didn’t know the guy he bought it from. He said he spoke with the other man separately who told him he put up 40 percent of the money for the bike but could not tell him how much that amounted to. Lo said he talked it over with Sgt. Ryan Sornberger and they decided to arrest the two men who paid for the bike. The truck and truck driver were released at the scene with a ticket for going the wrong way after the other suspects told police he knew nothing about the sale. A tow truck was called to take the motorcycle. Sean Lynch, 22, of 12 Gladstone St. in Smithfield, and Aaron R. Brown, 21, of 21 B St. in Smithfield were charged with possession of a stolen motorcycle. They refused to give police any information about the man they bought the bike from.

SHOPLIFTING

Loss prevention at the Wal-Mart on Bald Hill Road told police they saw a Warwick man purchase some items in the electronics department, including a laptop, a CD, shoes and a Red Sox magazine and then begin concealing items in the bag on his way to the front door. They told police they recovered 11 items worth $86.87 from Donald Arthur Riddle, 42, of 911 Toll Gate Rd. in Warwick. He was charged with shoplifting and later released on $2,000 surety bail.

Marian R. McHale, 71, of 885 Middlebridge Rd. in South Kingstown, was charged with stealing three rings from the jewelry department at Sears in the Rhode Island Mall on Nov. 2. Loss prevention told police they saw her conceal the merchandise and then continue shopping until she left the store without paying for the concealed stuff. Loss prevention said $169.98 worth of merchandise was recovered from her. She was later released from headquarters with a summons.

Joshua L. Deveau, 29, of 16 Salix Ave. in Warwick as charged with stealing $170.49 worth of goods from the Wal-Mart on Bald Hill Road on Oct. 30. Loss prevention at the store told police he concealed a drill in a toolbox and they stopped him outside and brought him to the security office where they found more stuff in the box. He was later released with a summons.

A Cranston man was charged with shoplifting and obtaining money under false pretenses on Oct. 31 after loss prevention told police they watched him as he walked around matching receipts he had in his hand with merchandise in the sporting goods section of the Wal-Mart on Bald Hill Road and then take the goods to the service desk and present them as purchases he made at the store. Loss prevention said they allowed the man to sign the return slip before they informed him he was being detained. Loss prevention said that day’s total was $35.35 but that the suspect, identified as Jeffrey M. Tarbox, 57, of 50 Howard Ave. in Cranston, was a repeat offender and they wanted him told to never come back to the store. He was later released with a summons.

DUI

Officer Robert Gauvin reported finding a Ford pickup truck buried in some bushes in the median just in front of CCRI on East Avenue. He said it was around 3:25 a.m. when they got the call and he arrived to find no skid marks before the median or the grass or any evidence that the driver tried to stop before he hit a tree, which, apparently, was what brought the truck to a halt. He said the driver was disheveled but apparently unhurt and agreed to take a field sobriety test, even as he complained he was cold and shivering. He said the driver failed the field sobriety test and was taken to headquarters where he agreed to take a breath test and told Gauvin that he does not like to drive drunk. Gauvin said he registered a .150 and a .149 when he took the test at 4:57 a.m. Jacob M. Bruns, 32, of 5 Alex St. in Coventry was charged with DUI, laned roadway violations and driving without evidence of insurance.
