SHOPLIFTING

A Providence man was charged with attempting to steal six pairs of jeans from the Sears store at Rhode Island Mall on Jan. 23. Loss prevention said Augustine Andrews, 56, of 662 Douglas Ave., bagged the $348 worth of jeans and walked out of the store without paying for them. He was later released with a summons.

Sandra L. Williams, 51, of 5300 Post Rd., Warwick, was charged with stealing two bottles of perfume from Nordstrom’s Rack in Warwick Mall on Jan. 24. Loss prevention said they saw her conceal the two boxes and leave without paying for them. She was charged as a habitual offender and later released on $2,000 surety bail.

A Connecticut woman was charged with shoplifting at the Best Buy store on Bald Hill Road on Jan. 20. Loss prevention told police they followed a suspect outside and searched him for an Xbox hard drive but didn’t find it. The man told them he put it back. His companion told police she put back what she took as well, although they learned later that she had an adapter concealed down the front of her pants. Olivia Cox, 26, of 67 Litton Ave., Groton, Conn., was charged with stealing the $59.99 Xbox adapter and later released on $1,000 surety bail.

DUI AND REFUSAL

Officer John Curley reported that he stopped a car that was being operated erratically on Centerville Road around 11:30 p.m. on Jan. 18. He said the woman did not smell of alcohol but appeared to be under the influence. He said she admitted she took medication for a number of ailments and she failed a field sobriety test. Curley said he suspected she was under the influence of a prescription medication she was taking called Fioricet and she was taken to Kent Hospital, where she refused to take a blood test. Kathleen Healey, 49, of 30 Morris Ave., Pawtucket, was charged with DUI and refusal.

Officer Rose Michel reported she was dispatched to the Showcase Cinema on Quaker Lane around 11:50 p.m. for report of two drunk people attempting to drive. She said two employees pointed to a car attempting to leave the lot and Michel went looking for it and found it on the other side of the building. She said there was a man sitting in the passenger seat with the ignition shut off. She said the man appeared to be intoxicated and smelled of alcohol. She said he denied driving the car and said he was just waiting for his friend to come out of the movie. Michel said the hood of the car was warm and the man yelled at her when she suggested he had been driving the car. She said the man’s female companion arrived at the car and refused to back off when she asked her to and was so intoxicated she swayed from side to side. She said she put the man in the back seat of her cruiser even as he was still belligerent toward her. She said other officers arrived and decided his companion should be taken to Kent Hospital for detox. She said she refused to cooperate and pushed the cruiser door into Michel aggressively, saying, “Don’t treat me like a [racial slur] from South Providence.” Michel said a struggle ensued as officers took the woman to the ground and handcuffed her. Ashley Garbarino, 25, was identified as the female who was charged with assault on Michel, with no address given in the report. Michel said the driver agreed to a field sobriety test, which he failed. Julio E. Rivera, 23, of 25 Quaker Dr., West Warwick, was charged with DUI and refusal after he refused a breath test at headquarters.

THEFT?

Police went to the Healthtrax Wellness & Fitness center at 2191 Post Rd. on Jan. 24 for a larceny from a car. A woman told police her wallet, containing various credit and debit cards, her Social Security card, driver’s license and 18 in cash, was taken from her purse in her car while she was working out inside. She told police she already cancelled the cards.

On Jan. 29, another officer was dispatched to Ann & Hope for a found wallet. An employee at the store said she didn’t know who turned the wallet in but it had been sitting at the front desk there for several days with no one claiming it. He said it turned out to be the wallet of the woman at Healthtrax and he returned it to her. He said she looked through it and said it appeared that nothing had been taken and she said she was grateful to have it returned.

LARCENIES

A cashier at the Shaw’s Market on Warwick Avenue told police she went to her car around 3 p.m. on Jan. 23 to get something and then went back inside. She said she got off work around 6 p.m. and drove home before she noticed that her purse, which she left on the floor of the passenger side, was missing. She said the purse itself was worth around $45 and she had $180 in cash in the wallet, along with her license. Officer James Wenneman said he checked with Shaw’s to see if they had any surveillance video of the scene but they had only one camera that scans the whole lot and that it takes a while for the camera to complete one rotation. No suspects or witnesses.

A client at Planet Fitness on Pace Boulevard told police she returned to her car and found the driver’s side window smashed in when she returned from her workout on Jan. 28. She said her purse, which was on the passenger side floor, was missing. She said the purse was a black Betsy Johnson bag with ruffles and the wallet was a black Betsy Johnson wallet with sequins and it contained multiple credit and debit cards. Officer Nicholas Reay said West Warwick Police called later to say they found the wallet in the parking lot of Roch’s market and would hold it until the owner claimed it. No suspects or witnesses.

A Pawtucket man came into headquarters on Jan. 26 to tell them that he was inside Teamworks at 170 Jefferson Blvd. between 1:45 and 3:15 p.m. that afternoon and returned to his car to find that his wallet was missing. He said there was a Banana Republic and a U.S. Airways card in the wallet. No suspects or witnesses.

Officer Manuel Pacheco reported going to an apartment complex on Cedar Pond Drive around 3:30 p.m. on Jan. 25 for a missing package report. A resident there told him he got a notice from FedEx informing him that package he was waiting for had been delivered to the apartment complex and he went down to the mailroom and realized that the package wasn’t there. He said the package contained a Vitamix SL00 Deluxe Complete Kitchen Set Blender valued at $599.99. He said he checked with the management of the complex and they said nothing had been turned in. Pacheco said he checked with FedEx himself and confirmed that the package was delivered. Unfortunately, there is no video surveillance of the mailroom. No suspects or witnesses.

A customer at the Mizu Japanese Steak House on Warwick Avenue told police he returned to his vehicle around 8:30 p.m. on Jan. 25 and found the driver’s side window smashed and his phone and GPS unit missing. Officer Michael Harris said he reviewed security footage with the management and saw a silver two-door car come up to the car and mess with the window but the video wasn’t clear enough to get a make or model of the car or the plate number.

A customer at the Showcase Cinema told police $350 in cash, business credit cards, $100 wallet and an iPad were stolen from her car while she watched a movie inside. She said she came back and found the passenger window smashed on her Ford Expedition. No suspects or witnesses.

BROKEN SLIDER

Officer Stephen Major reported that a sliding glass door on a house on Dodge St. was broken around 7 p.m. on Jan. 23. She said some motor vehicle drove by her house about that time and threw something at her sliding glass door in the living room and smashed it. She said she didn’t get the make or model or even the number of people in the car. No suspects or other witnesses.

ELECTRIC THEFT

Officer Daniel O’Connell reported going to Hollywood Landscaping on Jan. 20 for a report of a theft. The owner told him he parked his work truck around 2 p.m. on Jan. 18 and returned the following Monday to find the hood ajar on the truck and one of the batteries missing. He said a copper harness used for his front plow was also gone and miscellaneous wires were missing from the engine. He said the missing goods were worth about $1,400. No suspects or witnesses.
