Officer Gilda Fortier reported she was on patrol around 10 a.m. on Feb. 10 when she stopped at Fast Freddie’s Dunkin’ Donuts on Post Road when she noticed an individual waiting in line. She said he appeared unsteady on his feet and very loud and the clerks were regarding him with concern as they stepped away from the cash register. She said the man looked intoxicated and turned to her and said, “Hey look, I’m making sandcastles.” She said she asked if he was all right and he said, “I’m fine,” and she asked him why he was wearing a T-shirt and flip-flops on such a cold day. She said he replied he was fine and she told him it would be best if he left because he was upsetting the clerks. She said the beginning of a field sobriety test revealed that he could not do the rest of it and she did not want him to drive a vehicle and advised him to call a friend to pick him up. She said he had no luck finding a friend so she offered him a ride. She said he was patted down for officer safety before being put in the cruiser and they found a prescription bottle that should have contained an antidepressant but actually contained 47 Oxycontin tablets in the 80 mgs dosage. She said they also learned the car he was driving was a car that Enterprise Car Rental had been trying to locate for the last three weeks. Michael A. Saraiva, 37, of 33 Evergreen Ave., Cranston, was charged with possession of a controlled substance. Saraiva was already on probation for felony possession and was transported to the ACI as a violator.

Officer Michael Harris, who was on patrol with Fortier at the time called the owner of the prescription bottle and asked him to come by the headquarters and claim the three bottles with his name on them and he said he wasn’t sure that he would. Harris told him all the pills (except the Oxycontin evidence) would be destroyed within a few days if he did not claim them. Enterprise declined to press charges for possession of the car.

LARCENY

A Leland Avenue resident told police he was digging out his driveway on Feb. 18 when he noticed that his gas grill was missing from its usual place, at the top of the driveway, next to the garage. He said the last time he saw the CharBroil grill was on Sunday, Feb. 16. There were no suspects or witnesses.

A Cranston woman told police she went to Wasabi Japanese Cuisine on Bald Hill Road around 1:30 p.m. on Feb. 15 and returned to her car to find that a gold chain worth $10 and a $30 bottle of Paris Hilton perfume were missing from her car. She also reported that a pair of Nike running shoes worth $80 was also missing. She told police she walked into the restaurant with three people just behind her, who walked right out of the restaurant right after they entered, which she thought was suspicious. No witnesses.

DUI AND REFUSAL

Officer Daniel DiMaio reported he was on patrol around 1:40 a.m. on Feb. 11 when he saw an older Buick crossing over the solid centerline into the opposite direction of traffic and back again several times on Airport Road before he pulled it over on Warwick Avenue. He said he saw that the driver had blood all over his face, the front of the driver’s side wheel, the side of the car and on his shirt. He said he asked him what happened and the driver said he got into a fight at the All Stars Bar and Grill. He said the driver appeared to be drunk and smelled of alcohol. He said he got the driver out of the car and checked him for injuries before administering a field sobriety test. He said he stopped the test for safety reasons and feared the driver could get hurt. He said he arrested the driver on suspicion of drunk driving and took him to headquarters, where he refused a breath test.

He said he also asked a passenger what had happened with the fight they reported and he told DiMaio that Albert A. Silva, 21, was giving his friends a ride home and was driving all over the road, prompting one passenger to insist that he stop the car because he was endangering everyone in the car. When he finally did pull over, one of the passengers got out and punched the driver’s face. DiMaio said Silva refused to press charges against his passenger and denied that a fight occurred and did not want to press any charges. Silva was charged with DUI, refusal and laned roadway violations and later released to a sober adult.

Officer Matthew Moretti reported an accident near the Ocean State Theatre on Jefferson Boulevard around 6:35 p.m. on Feb. 17. one of the driver’s involved said she was traveling behind another car when the car had a blinker on for a right turn but suddenly turned left, causing the second car to hit it. Moretti said the other driver said it was not her fault, no matter what the others said, but Moretti noticed that this driver smelled of alcohol, even as she claimed to only have had one glass of wine at Providence Place Mall earlier that evening. Moretti said he administered a field sobriety test that the driver failed and the driver blew a .144 blood alcohol content on the portable breath tester and a .173 and a .158 at headquarters. Jill King, 46, of 70 S. Main St., Mansfield, Mass., was charged with DUI and later transported to Kent Hospital for detox.

SHOPLIFTING

A Pawtucket man was charged with felony shoplifting at the Kohl’s store at Rhode Island Mall on Feb. 17 after loss prevention at the store told police he concealed a “tablet” in a booster bag and walked out of the store without paying for it. Loss prevention told Officer Joshua Myer that the bag was lined with aluminum foil and duct tape that was used to defeat security tags and sensors on merchandise to be stolen. David A. Pitts, 25, of 105 Warren Ave., was charged with felony shoplifting and being a probation violator.

A Providence man was arrested at the Target store in Warwick Mall on Feb. 11 after loss prevention told police he concealed a number of items on his person before walking out of the store without paying for them. Jose Gonzalez, 21, of 56 Sears St., was also charged with possession of marijuana and later released with a summons.
