LARCENIES

A Walmart employee told police she was working between 7 a.m. and 12:30 p.m. on Feb. 20 and returned to her car to see that someone had stolen her Alpine stereo from her unlocked car. Loss prevention at the store said they had a photo from their surveillance of the suspect and gave that and a copy of the surveillance video to police. The victim said she did not recognize the suspect in the video.

A resident of the Cowesett Hill Apartments on Post Road told police someone entered her car overnight on Feb. 21 and stole six CDs and about $4 in change. The CDs include Jimmy Buffet, Bon Jovi, Michael Bublé and Broadway musicals.

A North Kingstown woman told police she was at the Showcase Cinemas and had a bag with a sweater she was taking to her seamstress and a bag with three maxi skirts she just bought from Nordstrom’s was taken sometime between 4:40 and 7:40 p.m. She said she searched around her residence in case she was mistaken about where she left the items but was now convinced they were taken from her car. She said the four items were worth a total of $275. No suspects.

A Rumford man told police he put his blue canvas briefcase in the trunk of his car “so it would be safe” while he ate at the Red Robin restaurant next to Macy’s in Warwick Mall on Feb. 19. He said he was in the restaurant from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. and when he came out he saw it was missing from the trunk. He said a small triangular window in the rear of the car was broken. He said the bag contained an iPad Air worth $500 and the case for it, which was worth $35. An HP laptop computer worth $900 and the briefcase itself was worth around $100. Police inquired about video surveillance but learned none was available. No suspects or witnesses.

SHOPLIFTING

On Feb. 23 loss prevention at Macy’s in Warwick Mall told Officer Stephen Major they watched a woman bring a number of items into a fitting room and emerge later with five of the items nowhere to be seen. They said they stopped her after she walked out of the store. The said they recovered five jackets worth $415 from Lucila M. Rodriguez, 42, of 619 Smithfield Rd., North Providence. She was processed at headquarters and released with a summons.

Officer John Zaborski was dispatched to the Walmart at Rhode Island Mall on Feb. 25 for a shoplifting in progress. Loss prevention told dispatch the suspect was running toward Sears until he got to the overpass and onto the highway, where he got into a dark sedan and drove away. Loss prevention did not get a number or a better description of the vehicle or which direction it headed. They said they watched him while he was in the store and saw him concealing phone cases from the electronics department in food packages he was holding before he went into the pharmacy and selected some supplements. They said he concealed those while walking back to the food section and then out of the store without paying for the concealed items. Loss prevention estimated the loss at $85.72.

HIT AND RUN

Officer Aaron Kay reported he was called into the lobby of headquarters for a walk-in report of a hit-and-run accident that occurred on Feb. 23. The man, who was from Tennessee, told Kay he was at a light on Bald Hill Road, taking a turn onto West Natick Road, when the car that was beside him suddenly cut into line in front of him, causing him to slam on his brakes but not in time to avoid a minor collision. He said he was about to pull over and exchanged papers and wait for police, but the other driver was aggressively blowing his horn and the 59-year-old man was afraid it was about to become a road rage incident and drove off. Kay asked him why, if that was the reason he took off, didn’t he call police between the time of the accident and the time he came into report it, which was three days. He said the man replied that he wasn’t familiar with Rhode Island laws and that “he had a long day.” Kay said he informed the man that they had a record of the accident and a complaint from the other driver that was made on the same day and that he had little choice but to charge him with misdemeanor leaving the scene of and accident. John Kline, 59, of 9330 Dividing Ridge Rd., Soddy Daisy, TN was later released on $1,000 personal recognizance.

DUI AND REFUSAL

Officer Adam Arico reported he was on patrol around 12:25 a.m. on March 4 when he saw a car doing an estimated 52 miles per hour as it moved from lane to lane erratically on Bald Hill Road south. He said he activated his lights and siren and pulled the car over near Trader Joe’s. He said he detected alcohol on the driver’s breath and noticed that his eyes were watery and bloodshot. He said the man admitted he had four to six beers earlier. He said the driver failed a field sobriety test and was arrested for suspicion of drunk driving. He was taken to headquarters, where he refused to take a breath test. He said all attempts to find a sober adult to take custody of the man were unsuccessful and Robert L. Owens, 54, of 770 Providence St., West Warwick, was transported to Kent Hospital for detox after he was charged with DUI and refusal.
