CAR JACKING

At approximately 4:16 p.m. on April 28, Officer John Curley responded to 1800 Post Rd., at the intersection of Post Rd. and Airport Rd. at the Airport Plaza, for a possible car jacking in progress. Curley said Dispatch informed him there was an altercation going on in the parking lot in front of Sukhy’s Threading. Upon arriving, Curley said he observed two white males standing outside of a black 2013 Ford Escape bearing Pennsylvania registration.

Curley said he spoke to one of the men and asked him what was going on, to which the man said the other male involved tried to steal his vehicle. When Curley asked the suspect what happened, he said the man told him he just felt like stealing a car. At that time, Curley said he placed Joshua J. Hicks, 24, of 34 Hicks Way, Foster in handcuffs and placed him in his cruiser while he spoke with the victim.

Curley said the man told him he parked his vehicle in front of the Rent A Center to pick up rental equipment and he glanced out the window and saw Hicks get into the front seat of his vehicle, so he ran outside to stop him. The man said he got into the passenger seat, and Hicks began to drive the vehicle roughly 50 feet until he rammed the shifter into park and raised the emergency brake before elbowing him in the face. The man said Hicks told him he was taking his vehicle, then grabbed the keys and got out of the vehicle. The man said Hicks got ready to hit him again but he stepped back and yelled for help, at which time a witness called 911. He said police arrived and took custody of Hicks, and that he wished to press charges for taking the vehicle as well as the assault.

Curley said he transported Hicks to Warwick Police headquarters, where he was fingerprinted, processed and charged with Driving Without Consent of Owner and Simple Assault or Battery.

Upon arrival at headquarters, Officer James Michailides said it was brought to the department’s attention through an earlier Attempt to Locate that Cranston Police had a stolen vehicle that crashed off of the Park Ave. area, and the operator, who matched the description of the suspect Warwick had in custody, fled the vehicle on foot. Michailides said the operator was described as having a limp, and while conducting a pat down of Hicks, he said he noticed Hicks had a prosthetic leg and walked with a limp.

Michailides said he asked Hicks if he had been in Cranston earlier in the day, to which he said, “No.” When asked again, Michailides said Hicks admitted to driving the stolen vehicle in question and provided the following written statement: “I’ve been up for about four days huffing wandering around in Cranston around Park Ave. when I stumbled across a car with the keys in it. In my unright frame a mind I stole the car because I was broke. I crashed it and made sure I didn’t hurt anyone and ran, afraid I’d get caught. I tried to steal another one in Warwick. I’ve been addicted to cheap inhalants and can’t remember a lot of things. I’m sorry for what I’ve done and need help.”

Michailides said he contacted Cranston Police and advised that Warwick Police had the suspect they were looking for in custody. Hicks was held for the next session with the bail commissioner.

SHOPLIFTING

Officer Scott Chanthaphouvong reported that members of the Warwick Police Department were dispatched to the Kohl’s department store at 650 Bald Hill Rd. at approximately 2:48 p.m. on April 24 in reference to a shoplifting in progress. Upon arrival, Chanthaphouvong said he observed a loss prevention associate and the suspect exit the store and the suspect was asked to return to the store with the officers. Once inside, Chanthaphouvong said video surveillance footage showed the suspect select a watch, later identified as an Armitron watch valued at $22.74, take it out of the packaging and it was suspected to be concealed while he was in one of the aisles. Chanthaphouvong said after searching the man for the watch and not finding it on him, officers backtracked where he had been and located the watch in a planters box outside the store. Based on failing to pay for the concealed merchandise as he passed all last points of purchase and exited the store, the loss prevention associate said Kohl’s wished to press charges for the shoplifting and requested that the man be trespassed from the business. Marc W. Daigneault, 33, of 4 Clarendon St., Johnston was arrested and transported to Warwick Police headquarters, where he was processed and later released with a Third District Court summons to answer on the charge of Shoplifting – Misdemeanor.

Officer Christopher Lo was dispatched to the Wal-Mart at 650 Bald Hill Rd. at 3:35 p.m. on April 26 for the report of a shoplifting and was advised an adult female was in custody. Upon arrival, Lo met with an asset protection associate, who said he observed a woman select one Olay face cream, open the package and conceal it in her purse while walking around the store. Once the merchandise was concealed, the associate said the woman continued to shop before going to check out at the register. He said she paid for all her merchandise in her shopping cart but made no attempt to pay for the merchandise concealed in her purse. After checkout, the woman exited the store, where she was confronted by asset protection associates and asked to go back inside the store, to which she complied. Once inside, Lo said all merchandise, which was valued at $17.94, was recovered and Wal-Mart wished to press charges and trespass the suspect. Sharon K. Alessandro, 43, of 150 Archambailt Ave., Apt. #B, West Warwick was arrested and transported to Warwick Police headquarters, where she was fingerprinted, processed, and subsequently released on a Third District Court summons for the charge of Shoplifting – Misdemeanor.
