UGLY “ROOMER”

An 81-year-old man came into headquarters on June 10 to report that he had been the victim of a larceny at his home. The man explained that a woman came to his door the day before and asked him about a Honda car that he had for sale. He told her he didn’t have a car for sale. He said he struck up a conversation with the woman and she expressed an interest in renting a room from him, saying she wanted to move out of her current home. He told police they agreed on a price for the room and she left, telling him she was going to gather up her belongings and would be back later. He said she struck up another conversation when she came back, having lured him out to the garage, she engaged him in conversation, leaving his front door unlocked. She said she then decided to leave a short time after that and he returned to his living room to find a number of things had gone missing, including his wallet with a credit card and $100 in cash, a cell phone and a safe containing check books. Officer Jamey Petit said he gave the man some information about identity theft and assisted him in calling to cancel the credit card and notify his bank of the missing checks. The man said the only name he had for her was “Vicky Jones” and Petit forwarded that and the other information to detectives.

LARCENY

A woman from Slocum, R.I. told police she was shopping at the Target store at 1245 Bald Hill Rd. on June 13 and left her wallet and a $200 pair of sunglasses in her shopping cart. She said she returned to the store later and found that no one had turned the items in. She said the wallet contained $4 in cash and 10 different credit cards. She said she already cancelled the cards and no activity was reported for them. Nevertheless, she said she would press charges if someone did try to use them.

A man who lives on Warwick Neck Avenue told police he came home on June 10 and noticed that a six-foot stainless steel grill worth $500, a 24-foot aluminum ladder that cost $200 and two window air conditioners that cost $400 were stolen from his residence. No suspects or witnesses.

A Waverly Street resident told police a $200 21-inch Craftsman lawnmower went missing from a shed in his yard on June 12. No suspects.

A car parked in a driveway on Bayside Avenue had a GPS unit, a pair of binoculars and six CDs stolen from it sometime overnight on June 10. No witnesses.

WARRANTS

Officer John Curley reported pulling over a car for not using a turn signal on Jefferson Boulevard on June 21 and ended up arresting the driver, identified as Catherine E. Thibedau, 26, of 84 Maple St., West Warwick, on an outstanding warrant for failure to appear in District Court. She was transported to headquarters, where she was processed and then held for the bail commissioner.

Michael R. Kay, 22, of 17 Davis St., Cumberland, was stopped for speeding on West Shore Road on June 15 after he was clocked doing 47 miles per hour in a 35-miles-per-hour zone. Officer Christopher Lo reported he had an active warrant from Superior Court for failure to appear for arraignment on a possession of a controlled substance charge. He was later transported to the ACI.

Xavier E. Nunez, 23, of 191 Vermont St., Providence, was arrested on a warrant around 11:15 p.m. on June 16 after the car he was riding in was stopped for not having a front license plate. Officer Aaron Steere reported there were actually three warrants out for Nunez for failure to appear for charges of driving without a license in three separate jurisdictions. He was later transported to the ACI to await arraignment in District Court.

Officer Matthew Higgins reported he was on patrol around 6:45 p.m. on June 19 when he stopped a Cadillac for having heavily tinted windows on Suburban Parkway in Oakland Beach. He said he pulled the car over in Iggy’s parking lot and learned the woman driving had an outstanding warrant for failure to appear in District Court. Lauren M. Fuller, 23, of Chandler Ave., Pawtucket, was held for the bail commissioner.

SHOPLIFTING

Patricia C. Defazio, 53, of 1416 Scituate Ave., Cranston, was charged with shoplifting at Kohl’s at Rhode Island Mall on June 21. Loss prevention told police she concealed 11 items of clothing and jewelry worth $144.38 in the bottom of a cart and left the store without paying for the goods. She was later released with a summons.

Cynthia Peckham, 67, of 29 Sunset Ave., Warwick, was charged with shoplifting at TJ Maxx on June 17 after loss prevention there told police she concealed a pair of Fendi and a pair of Rayban sunglasses worth a total of $129.98. She was later released with a summons.

Lauren J. Castelli, 20, of 5 Collidge St., Johnston, was released with a summons for District Court on June 12 after loss prevention at JC Penney in Warwick Mall told police she took several items out of her shopping basket and concealed them in her purse before leaving the store without paying for the goods. They told police $74 worth of assorted merchandise was recovered from Castelli.

Rebecca A. Souza, 40, of 57 Pocasset Ave., Johnston, was charged with shoplifting at Kohl’s on June 12. Loss prevention told police she took four t-shirts from the displays in the juniors’ department and concealed them in a shopping bag before leaving the store without paying for them. They told police the goods were worth $19.96. She was later released with a summons.

A Providence woman was charged with stealing $168 worth of goods from the JC Penney store in Warwick Mall on June 18. Madeline Pichardo, 21, of 325 Niagra St., was later released with a summons. A Cranston woman was arrested along with Pichardo at the same time and accused of stealing $236 worth of clothing. Thalia Brito, 20, of 180 Gladstone St., was also released with a summons.
