DRUGS

Officer Jason Cooke reported he found a car driving erratically on Warwick Avenue around 8:20 p.m. on Sept. 10 and pulled it over after several lane changes without signals. He said the driver was very nervous and was shaking and stuttering and smelled of alcohol. He said he gave no reason for the shaking and had trouble locating his license and registration and eventually said he didn’t have them with him. He said his name was Matthews Evans and said he didn’t have any weapons on him but kept his hands in his pants pocket and he was patted down. He said there was a bulge in his pocket and the driver admitted it was drugs. He said he put the cuffs on the driver and took a look at the goods. He said there was a bag of white powder and a bag of brown powder. At this point, Officer Timothy Kenyon told Cooke he recognized the driver and his name was David Evans. Cooke said he also found a large amount of cash in the man’s sock and a digital scale was found on the passenger seat. Cooke said the drugs he found tested positive for cocaine and heroin and he also found 20 pills that were identified as alprazolam, a controlled substance. He said there were 26 grams of cocaine and 22 grams of heroin. The cash, mostly in $100 bills, amounted to $6,290. He also learned that Evans’ license had been revoked. He was charged with possession of controlled substances with intent to deliver and driving on a revoked license. He was also charged with violating his probation for a charge of second-degree robbery in 2011.

SHOPLIFTING

Jaimee Dorsey, 20, of 153 Duke St., East Greenwich, was charged with shoplifting after she was stopped outside of the Walmart at Rhode Island Mall on Sept. 11. Police said they recovered an FM transmitter and a car seat cover in her purse that she had not paid for that were worth $68.93. She was later released with a summons.

Two women were charged with stealing about 28 pieces of clothing from the Macy’s store in Warwick Mall on Sept. 8. Loss prevention told police Natalya Pomeshchenko, 50, of 11 Anvil Dr. in Cumberland, had 18 items worth a total of $773.46 concealed in shopping bags, and Galina Kamynin, 56, of 727 Atwood Ave., Cranston, had 10 items worth $428.25 on her. They were released from headquarters with summonses for District Court.

Sean Deciantis, 38, of 18 East St., Providence, was arrested while running from the Stop & Shop in Meadowbrook on Sept. 9. Loss prevention called in a shoplifting in progress around 11:15 a.m. and police caught Deciantis behind the Dunkin’ Donuts as he fled on foot. He was charged with stealing 13 packages of steak and shrimp worth $292.50. Deciantis had a record of priors and was charged with felony shoplifting and for a warrant from Fourth District Court.

DUI AND REFUSAL

Officer Michael Harris reported he was on patrol around 1:50 a.m. on Sept. 11 when he saw a tan SUV go off the road and up on the grass on Tidewater Drive. He said he recognized it as a suspicious vehicle that was reported earlier and took off after it. He said he followed it as it sped into a nearby side street when it appeared he was attempting to elude Harris. He said it swerved off the road onto the grass at 15 Bassett Ave. He said a man attempted to get out of the car and was ordered to sit back down. He said he approached the driver and said he did not know that he had left the road. He said the driver smelled of alcohol and appeared to be under its influence. He said the driver fell face first into his vehicle when he got out and failed the field sobriety test, which had to be stopped for the driver’s safety. He said Robert N. Christofaro, 46, of 2157 West Shore Rd., was charged with DUI and refusal when he would not take a breath test at headquarters.

Officer John Curley reported he was dispatched to the Walt’s Roast Beef at 1800 Post Rd. around 6:30 p.m. on Sept. 7 for a motorcyclist who had fallen drunkenly off his bike and was assaulting people at the scene who were trying to keep him from driving away. He said he arrived to find the Harley-Davidson on its side and a man standing next to it who was bleeding. He said the man told them to “[Expletive] off!” when they approached. He said the man approached him and another officer aggressively and they pushed him back as he spit at one of the bystanders. He said they subdued him. He said the man continued to try and get away and say he hated Warwick cops and wanted them to die. He said the driver was just as resistant to Rescue workers but eventually was taken to Rhode Island Hospital after one witness said the driver twisted his back severely when he fell off his bike. Curley said he continued to swear at police and everyone else and at one point said he was going “to put a bullet directly in your head you [expletive].” Meanwhile, witness statements were gathered at the scene and all agreed he quickly lost control after cutting into traffic on Airport Road and started punching people who tried to keep him from getting back on his bike. Curley said Pasquale P. Squillante, 57, of 33 Anton Ct., Warwick, was charged with DUI, refusal, assault and disorderly conduct and left with the hospital staff, who told Curley his injuries were not that serious.

Officer Damien Andrews reported an accident between a pole and minivan on West Shore Road around 2 a.m. on Sept. 6. He said he found a single pole split and shattered and a 1996 Chrysler Town & Country about 50 yards away. He said the driver admitted he had been drinking and had five or six beers. He said the driver appeared to be under the influence and swayed as he stood. He said the driver was given a field sobriety test that he failed. He said he put the driver in the back of his cruiser to go to headquarters when he complained of a headache and Rescue was called to assess his condition and take him to Kent Hospital for evaluation. He said the driver refused to take a blood test at the hospital and was charged with DUI, refusal and driving on a suspended license. Jason E. Richards, 35, of 71 Wells Ave., Warwick, was left in the care of the hospital staff and told he had to come to headquarters for further processing when he was released.

Capt. Bradford Connor reported he was in an unmarked car on Post Road around 12:40 a.m. on Sept. 6 when he came upon two cars revving their engines at the red light for the Airport Connector. He said they both sped away from the light when it turned green and other cars got out of the way of them. He said he followed them into the Post Road Extension, where he clocked both of them at over 100 miles per hour. He said he pulled them both over in front of headquarters and called for assistance. He said he charged them both with drag racing and said they showed no regard for the safety of others as they raced. He turned them over to other officers for DUI investigation. Officer Nicholas Reay said Phillip L. Tillett, 45, of 196 Cumberland Rd. in Warwick, failed a field sobriety test and was given a preliminary breath test and registered a .128 but refused a second test at headquarters. He was charged with DUI, second offense, and refusal in addition to speeding and street racing.

Officer Christopher Lo reported he was looking for a suspected drunk driver when he found a black Volvo completely off the road near Kirby Avenue around 5:10 p.m. on Sept. 9. He said it appeared the car hit Pole #12 and he found the driver behind the wheel, with the engine running as he talked on his cell phone. He said the driver claimed he swerved to avoid hitting two dogs and hit the pole, but Lo suspected he was under the influence of something and slurred his speech and swayed when he got out of the car. He said Liam G. O’Connell, 33, of 26 Crawford Ave., Warwick, failed a field sobriety test and was taken to headquarters. He said O’Connell got belligerent when he learned he would be arrested and said “he was going to get us back for this.” He said O’Connell insisted that they take pictures of his wrists, which were injured by the handcuffs. He said O’Connell blew all zeros on the breath test but refused to submit to a blood test for other drugs when he was taken to Kent Hospital, where his lawyer was already on the scene. He was charged with DUI and refusal and possession of marijuana and alprazolam, a controlled substance, which were found in his vehicle.
