DUI AND REFUSAL

Officer Randy Francis reported stopping a car he saw drifting from lane to lane without directional signals at a high rate of speed on Greenwich Avenue around 1:10 a.m. on Nov. 9. He said he used his lights and sirens to pull the car over, but it continued onto Route 95 North for about 300 feet before stopping. He said the operator appeared to be intoxicated and smelled strongly of alcohol, although the man reportedly said he only had two drinks at the Mardi Gras night club complex in Cranston.

Francis said the driver had to hold onto the car to stand when he got out of the car and failed a field sobriety test. He was taken to headquarters where he refused a breath test. Fernando J. Depina, 36, of 764 Newport Ave. in Pawtucket, was charged with DUI, refusal and laned roadway violations. He was later released to a sober adult.

Officer Charles Austin reported he was dispatched to the intersection of Main and Morse avenues on Nov. 11 at 1:20 a.m. for a report of an accident. He said he arrived to find that a red Honda had struck a pole and was facing west in the eastbound lane.

Austin said he asked the driver if he was hurt and if there was anyone else in the car when the accident happened, and got a negative response for both questions. He then asked the driver if he had been drinking. The driver reportedly admitted he had four beers, but Austin said the man’s breath smelled strongly of alcohol and his speech was mumbled. The officer said he gave the driver a field sobriety test and the man failed it. David A. Olney, 25, of 19 Parade St. in Warwick, was taken to headquarters where he refused to take a breath test. He was charged with DUI and refusal and later released to a sober adult.

Officer Jacob Elderkin reported he was dispatched to the area of Warwick Avenue around 7:25 p.m. on Nov. 8 for a report of a hit and run at Warwick Avenue and Sandy Lane and a car last seen going east on Sandy Lane. He said he found a Jeep and followed it as it crossed over the center lane and swerved back before he pulled it over. He said the driver appeared to be intoxicated and had a strong odor of alcohol about her. He said the woman told him she was coming from a wine tasting and was on her way to the VFW Post in Conimicut.

Elderkin said he gave her a field sobriety test and she failed it. He said he asked her to take a portable breath test and she said no because “It would blow her out of the water.” He said she then, “on her own volition,” admitted to starting the day with two Bloody Marys, having six or seven beers with lunch and attending the wine tasting. He said she agreed to a breath test at headquarters and blew a .197 and a .190 on the Breathalyzer. Deborah A. Carpenter, 48, of 368 Hill Farm Road in Coventry, was charged with DUI, second offense, and leaving the scene of an accident. She was later released to a sober adult.

FLEECED JACKETS

Officer Eric Lima reported that he went to Macy's in the Warwick Mall to take a report of a grab and run incident involving four suspects and 14 North Face puffy jackets and a North Face back pack worth a total of $2,368. He said loss prevention at the store gave him a written statement about the incident that occurred on Nov. 9. They said three females and a male ran out of the store and jumped into a Chevy SUV with a Connecticut registration. Lima said a check on the registration did not return a match. They had no video of the vehicle but they gave Lima three discs with images of the four suspects running out of the store. There were no other suspects or witnesses. The report was forwarded to detectives.
