FOUND GUILTY

Last week, John Cavanaugh, 64, of Spring Hill, Florida, was found guilty of one count of first-degree sexual assault and four counts of second-degree child molestation. The verdict was returned after a three-day trial and two hours of deliberation. This was the second trial against the defendant. The first trial resulted in a hung jury in September.

The State proved that Cavanaugh molested a girl on several occasions in Warwick in the 1990s, when the victim was between the ages of 9 and 15. The victim reported the crime to the Warwick Police Department in 2013.

“Despite the passage of time, some cases of child sexual abuse, where the victim has only recently disclosed, may still be successfully prosecuted. The courage of this victim to come forward is commendable, as is the great work by police and prosecutors to follow through on the case and ultimately bring the abuser to justice,” said Attorney General Peter Kilmartin.

Warwick Police Detective Shaun Turcotte led the investigation.  Assistant Attorney General Timothy Healy prosecuted the case.

Cavanaugh has been held without bail since his arraignment on Feb. 21. The motion for new trial is scheduled for Jan. 9.

DUI AND REFUSAL

Officer Jeremy Smith reported being dispatched to Wyoming Avenue round 1 a.m. on Nov. 8 for a suspicious vehicle in someone’s driveway. He said he arrived to see a gold Mercedes leaving that address and tried to pull the car over, but it didn’t stop until it went through several side streets to Post Road. He said he ordered the driver out of the car and patted him down for weapons. He then asked him what he was doing in the neighborhood, and the man reportedly kept repeating “Just [expletive] stupid!” over and over.

Smith said the man finally admitted he had too much to drink and got lost in Warwick on his way home from Providence and got off Route 37. The officer ran a check on the driver and he had a suspended license. He said he gave the driver a field sobriety test and the man failed it. He said he took the driver to headquarters and noticed that he had slipped the handcuffs from the back to the front of his body on the way. He said the driver, Bradford M. McIlvaine, 25, of 1811 Warwick Ave., blew a .227 and a .222 blood alcohol content on the breath test. He was charged with DUI and later released to a sober adult.

Officer Javier Cabreja reported seeing a car ignore a “Do Not Enter” sign and head into oncoming traffic at Post and Centerville roads at around 1 a.m. on Nov. 8. He said he activated his lights and siren and went after the car, which then pulled into the Dunkin’ Donuts parking lot. He said the driver appeared confused and didn’t understand why he was being stopped. He said the driver smelled strongly of alcohol and looked drunk. He said he gave the driver a field sobriety test and the man failed it. The driver was then taken to headquarters, where he refused to take a breath test. Christopher Dubay, 32, of 89 Baycliff Dr., Warwick, was charged with DUI, refusal and laned roadway violations. He was later released to a sober adult, his girlfriend, who asked Cabreja where the citations he gave Dubay were. Cabreja said when she saw the tickets she asked Dubay why he didn’t take the breath test. “Why would you do that? You clearly reek of alcohol and you’re drunk. Why would you refuse? Now your license is going to be suspended.” Cabreja said he answered a few more questions for her before they left the lobby without further incident.

SHOPLIFTING

Officer Scott Chanthaphouvong reported going to Lowe’s on Greenwich Avenue on Nov. 13 to take custody of a shoplifting suspect accused of taking $76.88 worth of circuit breakers and learned the suspect had an outstanding warrant for failure to appear at a restitution hearing in District Court. Shawn Joseph Chadwick, 32, of 667 East Ave., Warwick, was booked at headquarters and then transported to District Court.

Luis Acevedo, 21, of 80 Bowdoin St., Providence, was charged with stealing $133 worth of clothing and bleeding on another garment causing $225 worth of damage at the Macy’s store in Warwick Mall on Nov. 12. He was apprehended after fleeing the scene in an older Toyota, which was stopped by Officer Darren Parrillo. He was later released from headquarters with a summons.

A Coventry man was arrested and charged with shoplifting at the Target store in Warwick Mall on Nov. 14. Loss prevention told police he loaded up a carriage with toys, clothing and electronics and then walked out of the store without stopping to pay for them. He was charged with stealing $200.43 worth of merchandise. Keith Boisvert, 29, of 66 Harris St., Coventry, was released with a summons.

Jonathan Lima, 22, of 50 Lane One in Warwick, was charged with stealing over $270 worth of clothing, electronics and coffee filters from Walmart on Post Road on Nov. 11. He was released from headquarters with a summons.

Christopher J. Dimeco, 20, of 5 Congress St., Warwick, and a juvenile male were arrested and charged with shoplifting on Nov. 14. Loss prevention at JC Penny at Warwick Mall said they stole $44 worth of goods and were stopped as they were leaving.

Loss prevention at the Walmart on Post Road showed police a video of a man loading a carriage up with a Sony camera, a Keurig coffee maker and a shaver worth a total of $462 and then walking straight out of the store into a waiting car and driving off, north on Post Road, before he could be caught. He had long brown hair pulled back and a beard and sideburns over a black shirt, black coat and black pants. The video and report were forwarded to detectives. He remains at large.

SMASH & GRAB

Police have no suspects in a smash and grab larceny on four vehicles parked at the YMCA on Centerville Road on Nov. 9. Coach bags and Michael Kors purses were taken that contained gift cards, credit cards, bank cards and about $150 in cash from the four vehicles. Police estimated the thefts occurred between 11 a.m. and 12:30 p.m. No suspects or witnesses.

STOLEN CAR

A North Providence family told police their son borrowed their car to attend a game at Hendricken High School on Nov. 7 and could not find the vehicle after the game. They said he parked near Warwick Avenue and Ticonderoga Drive and searched the area thoroughly before reporting it lost or stolen. They said it was a white 1997 Acura Integra with no special details or decals other than what were put on at the factory. No suspects or witnesses.

BB DAMAGE

Three vehicle owners who live on Chapmans Avenue told police they woke up on Nov. 11 to find that someone had done some damage to their cars with BB guns. He said one car had two shattered windows on the driver’s side and the driver’s door had a dent consistent with a BB strike. The next car had a broken driver’s side window consistent with BB shot, as is a third car down the street from it.

Officer Julio Benros said the last car was a Volkswagen Passat that had the left rear and the right rear vent windows broken. Benros said it was consistent with being fired from a slow-moving vehicle as it passed the driveway hitting one and then the other side of the car as it passed. There were no witnesses or suspects.

THEFTS

An Easton Avenue apartment dweller told police he woke up on Nov. 12 to learn that someone had removed the catalytic converter from his 2004 Buick Rendezvous’ exhaust system. He told police it must have occurred between Nov. 6 and Nov. 12. No suspect or witnesses. Report was forwarded to detectives.

A Jefferson Boulevard cleaning and handyman service reported that the snowplow that was usually stored on the property was missing when she arrived at work on Nov. 7. She said it was worth $1,400. No suspects or witnesses.

An Ives Road resident told police he had just picked up his motorcycle on Albany Street in Warwick on Nov. 4 and loaded it onto a trailer to bring home before he went to lunch at Warwick Mall and then stopped at Dave’s Marketplace and then at the Stop & Shop on Frenchtown Road before he went home to Ives Road. He said he was about to unload the trailer when he noticed the side door was open and he went inside to find that the saddlebags, windshield, jacket, keys, helmet and glasses were missing. He said the replacement cost for the missing stuff was around $4,250. The report was forwarded to detectives, who arrived to see if they could get any evidence from the scene. No suspects or witnesses.
