On Nov. 7 Robert L. Haughey, 38, of 119 Model Ave. in Warwick, was charged with stealing merchandise from CVS stores and returning the stolen items for cash at other CVS stores. Loss prevention for CVS told police that Haughey was a manager at the Buttonwoods CVS and was videoed taking items at various stores and returning them at others. They said he also admitted stealing 25 cartons of Marlboro Lights over the years, snacks, deodorants, razors and at least $25 in cash. He also admitted stealing Klonopin and lorazepam pills. Officer Matthew Higgins said Haughey told him he was out with a disability and had fallen behind in support payments and was stealing to make up the money over the last two years. He was charged with shoplifting and obtaining money under false pretenses and later released on $5,000 personal recognizance.

DUI OR REFUSAL

Officer Gregory Johnson reported he was on patrol around 10:50 a.m. on Nov. 17 when he was sent to Apponaug for an accident with injuries. Another officer told Johnson the driver looked out of it and Johnson began to investigate the accident as a possible DUI. He said he ordered the driver to get out of the car after he said he wasn’t hurt and the driver asked him what happened. He said he informed him that he ran into the rear of another vehicle. He said the man smelled strongly of alcohol and fell into the side of the car. He said he frisked the driver and found a vodka nip in his pants pocket. He said the man had trouble following the instructions for the field sobriety test and failed it and then began to refuse to cooperate. He was taken to headquarters, where he refused to take a breath test. Matthew W. Lamarre, 40, of 229 Vancouver Ave., Warwick, was charged with DUI and refusal. Johnson said Lamarre refused to sign a summons so he was held and later transported to District Court for arraignment.

Officer Aaron Kay reported he was on patrol when he heard a dispatch about a drunk driver who just left the Cumberland Farms lot at 1291 Warwick Ave. around 11 p.m. on Nov. 10. The witness said it was heading toward Hoxsie and all four people in the car appeared to be drunk. He said he saw the car outside of its lane at Hoxsie and he followed it onto West Shore Road, where it continued to cross in and out of the lanes before abruptly turning into the Walgreens parking lot and bounced to a stop. He said he approached the car and heard a lot of commotion as he tried to tell the driver why she was stopped. He said she told him she didn’t have her license on her and was only driving because everyone else in the car was too drunk to drive. He said there was an infant in a car seat behind the driver’s seat and the seat was not properly installed. He said he had no progress in communicating with the driver and ordered her out of the car for a field sobriety test. He said he had her put her shoes on for the test. He said she failed the test and he presented her with a portable breath tester that she blew into. He said she did not succeed at blowing into it at first, but when she finally did he had a reading of a .251 blood alcohol content. He said she began to cry and say she was not going to be arrested. He said he did get her to headquarters in spite of her being confrontational and uncooperative. He said he checked the baby seat at headquarters and was able to lift it straight off the seat with no unfastening of any restraints. He said she eventually took a breath test and registered a .217 and a .221 blood alcohol content. Shaylin Daley, 19, of 94 Harris Ave., West Warwick, was charged with DUI, improperly restraining a child and several other traffic violations. He said he also reported the child seat violation to the DCYF. She was held in the cellblock while arrangements were made for the infant and her.
