Police and Fire investigated DPW fires

Posted

On Saturday night, Sept. 7 at about 9:10 p.m., the Warwick Fire Department was dispatched to the Department of Public Works (DPW) on Sandy Lane for a report of two garbage trucks on fire. Warwick Police responded, as Warwick firefighters extinguished the fire and confined it to the two trucks. Nevertheless, the trucks were significantly damaged.

The Rhode Island State Fire Marshal and Warwick Fire and Police officials investigated the cause of the fire. The initial investigation suggested that the fire might have been caused by an electrical problem.

Around 5:20 a.m. on Sept. 12, Warwick Fire was back at the DPW for another garbage truck fire. They extinguished the fire and the fire marshal and arson detectives were back on the scene. The truck on fire was one of the first trucks damaged in Saturday’s fire. A preliminary investigation determined this fire to be caused by a suspected electrical problem involving the battery.

As a result of the second fire, arson investigators completed an additional inspection of the damaged garbage truck and were able to recover evidence showing an electrical problem caused both fires. The final reports for both incidents were made available yesterday as CR 13-4503-OF and CR 13-4592-OF.
