Police get calls since releasing photo of sledgehammer found near murder victim

Warwick Police are following up on several calls since the release last week of photographs of a sledgehammer found in the vicinity of the body of John “Jack” Fay on May 18 in City Park.

“It has generated some interest,” Det. Captain Robert Nelson said yesterday.

He didn’t offer the total of calls since photographs of the sledgehammer first appeared on the department’s website and was later picked up by social media before publication in last Thursday’s Beacon. The Beacon website story got more than 1,000 hits in the first two hours. Overall views as of yesterday morning were 5,335.

He said the photos have served the purpose of “keeping the crime in the forefront of people’s minds” and could lead to memories of things people think could have a bearing to the crime.

Fay’s body was found stuffed in an overturned trashcan not far from a park trail. A retired postal worker, Fay, 66, was a regular early morning jogger in the park. He is believed to have been beaten to death.

Nelson said photographs of the sledgehammer can be viewed on the department’s website. He asked that people having information call Det. Sgt. Mark Canning at 468-4236 or the anonymous TIP line at 732-TIPS (8477).
