RI's only Latino gallery opening in Pawtuxet Friday

This weekend, the quaint and vibrant shopping district of Pawtuxet Village will welcome La Galería del Pueblo (The Village Gallery), Rhode Island's only Latino based non-profit cooperative art and cultural gallery.

The grand opening and meet-and-greet event of the gallery will be held Friday, December 2 from 5 to 7 p.m. Village businesses Salon KG, Noon Design, Cork & Brew, Art & Soul, Twice Told Tales & Village Art & Antiques, Tag Sale Treasures, and ALPHA studios will have special offers and other events will take place in the Village the same weekend.

The gallery will also be open to for a sneak peek during the Pawtuxet Village Holiday Stroll beginning at noon, where visitors can see the works of Rhode Island Latino artists Félix Dicló, Támara Díaz and Atabey Sánchez. The artists will be available to greet visitors starting at 12:30 p.m. and a book signing by Christina Rodríguez of Providence is scheduled for 1:30 p.m.

“I am excited to be one of the featured artists at La Galeria del Pueblo Rhode Island on December 3rd. It's an honor to represent Latino artists living and working in my favorite state,” Rodríguez said. “I'm grateful for the fun opportunity to promote childhood literacy at this event as well.”

La Galería del Pueblo shares the mission of its parent organization, Rhode Island Latino Arts (RILA), to become a bridge between Latinos and non-Latinos where valuable interactions, exchanging of ideas, developing of techniques, and progress can be had.

La Galería will be a place where local Latino established artists can exhibit and sell their work, conduct workshops with fellow artists, and mentor emerging artists. The space will offer intergenerational exchanges that welcome members and guest artists that range in age from 8 to 80 years of age. In order to bring visitors into the gallery, it will provide regular programming such as artist talks, demonstrations or workshop activities for the community at-large.

La Galería may also become a studio where Latin American artists can set up a workspace to create, provide artistic programs, have access to the broader community, and enjoy a heightened exposure for their work. The goal is to provide an environment of inclusiveness and direct access to artists and artistic conversations, an opportunity that is often lost in a traditional gallery setting. La Galería’s studio artists will be considered partners in its vision, and will bring a strong sense of community and artistic energy to the gallery.

“As a resident of the Village and Chair of the Friends of Pawtuxet Village, I’m excited about this new venture and contributing to the Village’s economy. Exposing the neighborhood to Latino art and building a bridge for Latino artists to show their work to this community is particularly exciting,” said Marta Martinez, Chair of the Friends of Pawtuxet Village. “I am of Mexican heritage and I raised my kids to recognize and celebrate both their Latino and American heritages, so I’m hoping to do the same for Pawtuxet Village.”

La Galería del Pueblo will carry an eclectic array of traditional and contemporary Latino Arts and Crafts, created by artists living and working in Rhode Island. Its hours are Thursdays & Fridays from 3 to 6 p.m., Saturdays from 11 to 6 p.m., and Sundays and other days by appointment.
