(Galactic battles galore)

Gone are the interesting original characters and deep philosophical messages of the Star Wars series, to be replaced by endless galactic battles and blatant messages about political dictatorships and the need for rebellion.

If you like special effects, starship warfare and unusual creatures, you'll like this spinoff of the ever-popular series.

If you look closely and quickly, you'll get a quick glimpse of some of the original characters, but for the most part, there's a new generation of rebels.

Leading the resistance is Jyn Erso (Felecity Jones), daughter of Galen (Mads Mikkelson), a scientist who has been forced to develop a massive new weapon for the Empire. The family has gone into hiding, but is eventually found by the evil Director Krennic and taken into captivity. Jyn escapes and grows up to be a force for the Rebel Alliance.

Together with Cassian Andor (Diego Luna) and a smart, sarcastic droid called K-2SO, they gather a motley crew of rebels, including a blind warrior, a mercenary and an Imperial defector, and plot to stop the Empire from gaining a secret weapon that could destroy the world.

The battles go on and on, endlessly to the point where it is difficult to determine who is who and who is winning. But the Force is with them, and although outnumbered ten to one, they manage to hold their own. The story ends with the threat of more mayhem, led by the dark and determined Darth Vader, moments before the original Star Wars begins.

Rated PG-13 with the constant violence of the sci-fi genre.
