(Senior citizen

action anti-hero)

Liam Neeson has become the senior citizen action hero of the decade, replacing Arnold and Bruce as the number one tough guy.

Unlike his sympathetic, good-guy character in the “Taken” series, Neeson plays a cold-blooded aging hitman  with no moral values…until his estranged son is accused of murdering his best friend’s son.

In the “No sin goes unpunished” fashion, Jimmy tries to make amends for the killing, only to gain the ire of his pal and mob boss, Sean (Ed Harris). What follows is two hours of car chases, high body counts and lots of spilled blood, as Jimmy tries to protect his son from Sean, the police and a hired assassin.

It is difficult to gain any sympathy for Jimmy, known in the mob circles as The Gravedigger. He kills anybody who gets in his way, including cops. It is all done to protect his son, who is innocent and trying to lead a good family life.

The action happens in and around New York City, all in one night. Shots of the city and Madison Square Garden are interesting, and the acting, especially by the two veteran stars, is good.

There is some honor among thieves – or murderers – but watching Neeson trying to redeem himself while beating much younger men to a pulp is a bit of a stretch.

But if it is action and tension you want, “Run All Night” gives it to you in big doses.

Rated a big R with violence, profanity, drugs and little in the name of morality.
