Range of activities, trips on tap at Senior Center

It really doesn’t matter what’s happening at the Johnston Senior Center – officials like Millie Santilli try to make each event special.

Take last Thursday’s first drawing of the newly launched 15-Week Club, for example.

With the day’s bingo in full swing, there was a break in the action so Santilli – and ladies like program coordinator Ellen Trementozzi and activities assistant Jean D’Arezzo – could conduct the first of 15 weekly drawings for a $25 prize.

“And the winner is,” Santilli said after the winning ticket was pulled, “Herman McDuffie. Congratulations!”

Santilli also announced that people can still enter the 15-Week Club, which only costs a one-time fee of $15 and affords members a chance to win grand prizes of $250, $175, $100, and a bonus amount of $100.

“People who purchase a ticket do not have to be present to win,” said Tony Zompa, the center’s executive director. “This has really been a popular event in the past few years, so we’re starting it up again and we hope more people join the 15-Week Club. Please consider buying a ticket and selling one to a friend. This fundraising effort helps us continue our many different programs here at the center.”

People who’d like to enter can purchase a ticket at the center, located at 1291 Hartford Ave. in Johnston, or by calling 401-944-3343.

TURNING STONE RESORT TRIP

One of the center’s most popular trips has been the annual trek to Turning Stone Resort Casino and Bingo Hall in Verona, N.Y., and this year it is set for Nov. 1-3.

Because Turning Stone’s popularity is so high, center officials are trying to reserve room space as soon as possible so that the trip isn’t canceled or that the casino and bingo hall isn’t sold out on the above dates.

The cost is $269 per person for double-occupancy rooms, and a single is $359.

“It’s always a great trip at a great resort,” Santilli said. “Our group travels in a privately chartered, lavatory equipped luxury motor coach, and daily packages include $40 in coin play or $30 in bingo dollars and $10 in bingo match place and a $15 food coupon. There’s also a second day free buffet breakfast and other special deals in each package.”

The New York resort has around-the-clock gaming excitement and features 980 table games and 2,400 instant multi-game machines. Turning Stone is also home to New York’s largest bingo hall, and there’s even a special Keno lounge in the facility.

People who’d like more information or to sign-up for the Nov. 1-3 trip should call Trementozzi, the center’s new program and trips coordinator, at 401-944-3343.

BILLARDS TABLE OPEN TUESDAY-THURSDAY

If you like shooting pool, the center’s regulation-size pool table is open at 10 a.m. on Tuesday through Thursday. No reservations are necessary, and all times are available on a first come, first-served basis.

Just last Thursday, in fact, Johnston residents Carol Gesualdi and Ken Rawlinson enjoyed the always-popular game of eight-ball, then put their cues in the rack and later enjoyed the day’s lunch.

“This may be one of the best pool tables around,” Zompa said. “We’re proud to have such a diversified offering of events for our valuable members, volunteers, and guests.”
