Ready for 4th year, ‘Proud To Be An American’ benefit keeps focus on veterans, adds new sounds

Founded in the mid-1980s, Reminisce has become a staple of the local music scene.

Inspired by the music of the ’50s and ’60s, the vocal group has performed oldies and doo-wop tunes on stages across the Ocean State and beyond, from New York City’s Radio City Music Hall to Connecticut’s Mohegan Sun Casino and Boston’s Hatch Memorial Shell.

Next month, Reminisce will serve as a featured performer in support of a cause close to its members’ hearts – the fourth annual “Proud To Be An American” fundraiser for the Providence VA Medical Center.

“It’s a great cause,” said Ron Iacobucci, a Vietnam veteran and one of the group’s founding members. “Anything for the vets.”

“We were honored to be chosen,” said Jack Mento, another founding member of the group and a U.S. Army veteran.

Reminisce joins an entertainment lineup featuring Steve Quirini of Starzz Entertainment and special guests.

“Everybody knows Reminisce … They’re like a household name,” Quirini said. “It’s just a little something different this year.”

Quirini and his Starzz partner, Lisa D’Ambra, organize the annual benefit event along with Vin Palumbo, owner of Palumbo’s Garage in Johnston, and his wife, Elly Palumbo. The four began the effort after bonding over their shared passion for helping veterans.

This year’s installment of “Proud To Be An American” is set for Saturday, May 21 – Armed Forces Day – in the Triple Crown Room at Warwick’s West Valley Inn. Based on the effort’s past success, the organizers have high hopes.

“We just want to see it grow bigger and bigger every year,” Quirini said. “It’s a party, it’s a fundraiser, it’s a get-together.”

D’Ambra said all of the money raised through “Proud To Be An American” – more than $23,000 over the first three years – goes directly to support the needs of local residents who have served the nation in uniform.

“All the money we raise stays right here in Rhode Island,” she said.

The nature of that support is wide ranging. Donna Russillo, head of the Voluntary Service Program for the VA Medical Center, said such donations help provide for veterans and their families in ways beyond what the government provides – from special programming and personal hygiene items to holiday gifts for veterans’ children and electronics used for therapeutic purposes.

“We try to do a lot of the things the government can’t do,” she said. “The need seems to grow every year.”

This year’s “Proud To Be An American” gathering promises the same dinner, dancing, raffles, and ceremony as past events. The Triple Crown Room accommodates up to 650 people, and provides an option for two dance floors.

“We’ll have a lot of dancing this year, trust me,” Iacobucci said with a smile.

The Cranston High School East JROTC will provide the honor guard, while the Coventry High School JROTC will perform a ceremony at the POW/MIA table.

“They just do a really nice job,” Russillo said of the ceremony. “It brings tears to your eyes.”

D’Ambra said the organizers have reached out to U.S. Sen. Jack Reed, U.S. Rep. James Langevin, Warwick Mayor Scott Avedisian, retired Lt. Gen. Reginald Centracchio, and VA Medical Center Director Dr. Susan MacKenzie for the speaking portion of the night’s program.

Last year’s event drew hundreds of people and raised more than $7,000 for the cause. D’Ambra did not specify a fundraising goal for this year – “It’s a big number,” she said with a smile – but noted that many individuals and businesses have already “stepped up to the plate” to provide support through donations of money or raffle prizes.

“We tell people no amount is too small,” she said.

She also praised Chris Giardina – a.k.a. “T-Bucket” – who each year at his own expense makes T-shirts with a patriot imprint and sells them at the event to supplement the fundraising total for the VA Medical Center.
