Rebels sweep Hawks in D-I quarterfinals

Posted

Hendricken knew that it was facing an uphill battle at No. 2 South Kingstown on Thursday night in the Division I boys’ volleyball quarterfinals.

The Rebels rolled through their league schedule with a 14-2 record this season – and Thursday would be no different.

The 8-8 Hawks were overmatched from start to finish, as SK breezed into the semifinals with a 3-0 victory behind 25-10, 25-9 and 25-10 wins.

SK’s John Vaccaro took control of the match, filling up the stat sheet with five blocks, five kills, eight aces and 41 assists.

The Rebels were set to take on Mount St. Charles in the D-I semifinals on Monday night at Brown with a trip to the championship on the line.

Hawks’ track claims two titles

The Bishop Hendricken track and field team earned the title at the Hendricken Invitational over the weekend, as well as at the Freshmen State Championships last week.

At the Hendricken Invitational, the Hawks took the championship with a total of 84 points, beating out second-place North Kingstown, which compiled 57 points.

Hendricken got individual wins from Chris Storti in the shot put, Kwity Paye in the long jump, Max White in the sophomore 1500-meter run and Nick Celico in the 3000-meter. The Hawks’ freshmen/sophomore sprint medley relay also placed first.

At the Freshmen State Championships, Hendricken’s title-clinching performance was highlighted by Connor Sheridan, who won the javelin throw, pole vault and 110-meter high hurdles. The Hawks’ Harry Antone also claimed first in two events, winning the 400 and 800-meter runs.

Hendricken’s 4x100 relay team edged out Middletown for the state title, as well.

The Hawks’ point total of 115 far surpassed the field, with NK placing second with 79 points.

’Canes’ Martin, Titans’ Reygadas win events at Hendricken Invitational

Warwick Vets’ Levi Martin has proven himself as one of the top high jumpers in the state this spring, and his impressive outdoor season continued on Saturday.

Martin edged out Hendricken’s Ben Murphy – the R.I. Indoor State Champion – for the title at the Hendricken Invitational with a jump of 6 feet, 2 inches.

Toll Gate’s Nick Reygadas won the freshmen 1500-meter run at the Hendricken Invitational on Saturday, a week after he placed second at the Freshmen State Championships.
